MEN'S BASKETBALL USES BALANCED SCORING TO DEFEAT ADELPHI, 69-56

Syracuse, N.Y. – Four Dolphins scored at least 13 points as the Le Moyne College men's basketball team defeated Adelphi University, 69-56, on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Junior guard Naté Gause (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie/Quinnipiac) led the Dolphins with 16 points off the bench, while pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out four assists for the third straight game. Graduate student center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and sophomore guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) each tallied 14 points, while Janson grabbed 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season and Lovell handed out a game-best six assists. Senior guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) was the fourth Dolphin in double digits with 13 points.

Duane Morgan led the Panthers in the loss with 21 points, 12 of which he scored in the first half. Ethan Hamlet came off the bench to record a career-best 11 points.

After Edward Sullivan opened the game's scoring with a three-pointer, the Dolphins scored seven straight points to take the lead, which they would not relinquish. Gause made a pull-up jumper, Champion buried a three-pointer from the right corner and then Janson made a lay-up with 15:58 left.

Following 10 points from each team over the next 3:20, Le Moyne scored eight of the next 10 points to take its largest lead of the first half. Sophomore forward Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) and freshman forward Stan Buczek">Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) opened the run with two free throws each, Gause followed with a lay-up and then Buczek made a fast-break lay-up with 8:53 remaining in the stanza.

The Panthers countered with eight consecutive points to close their deficit to two with 6:36 to play. Ryan DeNicola ignited the run with back-to-back jumpers and then made a free throw 39 seconds later, while Morgan capped the streak with a three-pointer from the top-of-the-key.

Le Moyne scored the last six points of the half to take a 33-25 lead into halftime. Janson had a pair of jumpers 2:04 apart and then Mahoney made a jump from the left elbow with 1:14 remaining.

Champion opened the second half with a lay-up and a three-pointer from the right corner in the first 50 seconds to extend Le Moyne's lead to 38-25.

The teams then went back and forth over the next 10 minutes, with Le Moyne's lead bouncing between 12 and 17 points. Lovell netted nine of Le Moyne's 18 points in the span, while Hamlet and Morgan each had five of Adelphi's 16 points.

Following a conventional three-point play by Morgan with 9:19 left to pull the Panthers within 56-41, the Dolphins scored seven straight points for their biggest lead of the game. Janson had a dunk and lay-up around a free throw by Champion before Buczek made a lay-up off a feed from Lovell.

Adelphi answered with a 7-0 run of its own over a span of 1:29. Boris Fodouop started the stretch with two free throws, Hamlet followed with a three-pointer from the right side and then Morgan converted a fast-break lay-up.

After the Dolphins pushed their lead back to 18 with 1:38 left, the Panthers scored the game's last five points. Champion had a pair of lay-ups in Le Moyne's 6-3 spurt, while Hamlet nailed a three-pointer with 1:17 left for the last field goal of the contest.

Le Moyne (13-8, 10-5 NE-10), which has won 10 of its first 15 Northeast-10 Conference games for the first time since the 2003-04 season, returns to action on Saturday at Northeast-10 Conference-leading and #16 nationally-ranked Southern Connecticut State University (19-2, 13-2 NE-10) at 3:30 p.m.
