Brookhaven, N.Y. – Rob Veltre recorded a two-run double in the eighth inning to lead Dowling College to a 6-5 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Golden Lions Field.

The Golden Lions got on the scoreboard first with two runs on two hits in the first inning. Jon Cruz led off with a walk, moved to second on a groundout and then stole third base. JC Brandmaier followed with a single to right field to drive in Cruz. After a single by Daniel Parisi, Rob Veltre plated Brandmaier from third with a ground ball to the shortstop.

The Dolphins took the lead in the top of the fourth with three runs on two hits and two Dowling errors. Sophomore catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) drew a one-out walk and then took second on a single to left field by senior left fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell). Junior third baseman Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) then singled to second to load the bases. West then scored on a passed ball, while Reynolds and Nagelsmith came around to score on errors by the catcher and pitcher.

Dowling regained the lead with a pair of runs on one hit and two Le Moyne errors in the bottom of the fourth. After Veltre reached on an error by the second baseman to start the frame and a fly out, Mike Rizzitello tripled to knock in Veltre. Vinny Orlando then reached on an error by the third baseman, which allowed Rizzitello to score.

Le Moyne took the lead again in the top of the eighth inning with two runs on two hits. After sophomore second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) singled to center with one out, sophomore first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) then doubled to right center to knock in Charbonneau. Following the second out of the inning, sophomore shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) scored Le Moyne's fifth run.

The Golden Lions took the lead back with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth. Brandmaier singled to center with one out, stole second and then moved to third on a single to right by Parisi. Following a Le Moyne pitching change and a wild pitch that allowed pinch-runner RJ Going to take second, Veltre doubled to drive in Brandmaier and Going.

Junior southpaw Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) took the loss after giving up six runs (four earned) on seven hits over seven and one-third innings pitched. Tom Bamman earned the win out of the bullpen by retiring all five batters he faced.

Le Moyne (3-5) will close out the abbreviated series with the Golden Lions on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. The series was scheduled to be four games, two seven-inning games on Saturday and Sunday, but was reduced to one nine-inning game each day on Saturday morning.
