DOWLING USES LATE RUNS TO DEFEAT BASEBALL, 5-4

Brookhaven, N.Y. – Adam Schuster singled down the left field line to drive in the winning run as Dowling defeated the Le Moyne College baseball team, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Golden Lions Field.

The Dolphins started the game's scoring with single runs in the third and fourth innings. In the third, sophomore second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) doubled to left field with one out and took third on an error by the left fielder. Two batters later, sophomore first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) doubled to drive in Charbonneau. The next inning, freshman catcher Matt Buroni (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) drew a one-out walk and then advanced to third as junior right fielder Jeremy Mathers (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger/Onondaga C.C.) reached on an error by the pitcher. Freshman center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) then singled to center to drive in Buroni.

Dowling took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on two hits and three Le Moyne errors. Daniel Parisi led off the frame by reaching on an error by the third baseman. After a groundout and a walk, Schuster reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on an error by the shortstop, which allowed Parisi to score. Rob Costanzo then singled to plate Schuster, while taking second on an error by the catcher. Jon Cruz then singled to left field to drive in Costanzo, but was thrown out trying to advance to second.

Le Moyne evened the score at three in the eighth inning on two hits. Sophomore shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) led off with a double down the right field line and then Wright was hit by a pitch after a pitching change. Following a sacrifice bunt and a pop out, Buroni singled up the middle to drive in Swetman.

The Golden Lions regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth on a pair of hits. After Cruz singled through the left side with one out and took second on a groundout, he scored on a double to right field by JC Brandmaier.

The Dolphins tied the score once again with a run without a hit in the ninth inning. Mathers drew a walk to start the inning and then stole second. Following a groundout, a walk by Charbonneau and a pitching change, Swetman reached on a fielder's choice to second to drive in Mathers.

Dowling won the game in the bottom of the ninth with one run on two hits. Rob Veltre led off with a double to right field. After a pop out, Schuster singled down the left field line to knock in Veltre.

Redshirt freshman righty Ryan O'Kane (Memphis, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) suffered his first loss of the season after yielding five runs (two earned) on eight hits over eight and one-third innings. Tom Bamman earned his second win of the weekend despite blowing the save opportunity in the top of the ninth.

Le Moyne (3-6) returns to the diamond for a four-game series at Philadelphia University on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
