BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AT PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY, 1-2, 2-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Philadelphia, Pa. – Sophomore second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) scored his team's only run in the first game and drove in the winning run in the nightcap as the Le Moyne College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Philadelphia University on Saturday afternoon at the James J. Ramp Athletic Field Complex. The Rams won the seven-inning opener, 2-1, while the Dolphins took the seven-inning nightcap, 2-0.

In the opener, Philadelphia University got on the scoreboard first with a run on one hit in the second inning. Designated hitter Ken McCormick drew a walk to start the frame and moved to third on a one-out double by shortstop Hector Gonzalez. Catcher TJ Burgmann then grounded out to the right side to drive in McCormick.

The Dolphins evened the score at one apiece in the top of the sixth on one hit. Charbonneau reached on a dropped fly ball by the second baseman and then took second on a throwing error by the center fielder. Sophomore shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) followed with a double to left center to drive in Charbonneau.

After getting out of the top of the inning with a pair of groundouts, the Rams regained the lead in the bottom of the frame on three hits with two outs. McCormick started the rally with a two-out single up the middle. Following another single up the middle by center fielder Rick Reigner, Gonzalez doubled to left center to plate McCormick.

Junior lefty Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) took the loss for the Dolphins after yielding two runs on six hits over six innings pitched, while striking out six. Abraham Almonte earned the win out of the bullpen by retiring all four batters he faced, including three strikeouts in the seventh inning. Swetman had two doubles for Le Moyne's only hits in the game, while Gonzalez had three of Philadelphia's six hits.

Following five scoreless innings to start the nightcap, the Dolphins struck for the only run they would need in the top of the sixth on one hit and one Philadelphia error. Freshman third baseman Tyler Schmitt (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) led off with a single up the middle, took second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman right fielder Austin Bouse (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) and then stole third base. Charbonneau then drove in Schmitt by lifting a fly ball to right field, which was dropped by the right fielder.

Le Moyne tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning as sophomore first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) launched a lead-off home run over the fence in left field.

The Rams got a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, but redshirt freshman righty Ryan O'Kane (Memphis, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) recorded a strikeout and got a pop out to end the game.

O'Kane improved to 3-1 on the season by striking out a season high-tying eight batters, while yielding just four hits, in the shutout, his first as a collegian. Stephen Dickerson suffered the loss for the Rams after allowing two runs on four hits over seven innings, while striking out five. Schmitt recorded two of Le Moyne's four hits for the first multi-hit game of his career, while Gonzalez registered three of the four hits by the Rams.

Le Moyne (4-7), which lost three straight games by a combined three runs before the game-two victory, completes its weekend series with the Rams on Sunday with two more seven-inning games at the James J. Ramp Athletic Field Complex. First pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
