Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. - Sophomore first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) drove in four runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a split of a doubleheader with Philadelphia University on Sunday afternoon at the James J. Ramp Athletic Field Complex. The Dolphins won the opener, 6-0, while the Rams took the second game, 4-0.
Le Moyne struck for the only run it would need in the game in the first inning on a pair of two-out hits. After sophomore shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) singled up the middle, Wright doubled to left field to drive in Swetman.
The Dolphins extended the lead with three runs on two hits in the top of the third inning. Freshman center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) reached on a single down the third-base line and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a walk by Swetman, Wright blasted a three-run home run over the wall in left field.
Le Moyne completed its scoring in the contest with two runs on two hits in the sixth inning. Freshman designated hitter/catcher Matt Buroni (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) drew a walk to open the frame and then took second on a single to right field by freshman third baseman Tyler Schmitt (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon). After a sacrifice bunt by junior right fielder Jeremy Mathers (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger/Onondaga C.C.), sophomore second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Buroni. DiNorcia then doubled to left center to knock in Schmitt.
Freshman Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) earned his second victory of the year by striking out six over seven scoreless innings, while yielding just five hits and one walk. Cory Dean took the loss for the Rams after giving up four runs on five hits over four innings. DiNorcia, Wright and Schmitt each had two of Le Moyne's seven hits.
In the nightcap, Philadelphia scored a pair of runs on just one hit in the first inning. First baseman Jordan Force drew a walk with one out and advanced to third on a double to right by shortstop Hector Gonzalez. A wild pitch allowed Force to score and Gonzalez to move to third. Following a walk by right fielder Ken McCormick, pitcher Fernando Garza lifted a sacrifice fly to center to knock in Gonzalez.
The Rams added one run on one hit in the fourth inning. Garza led off with a double to center, took third on a groundout and then scored on a sacrifice fly to right by catcher John Brocious.
Philadelphia finished off its scoring with one run on one hit in the sixth. Gonzalez drew a walk to open the inning, stole second and third and then scored on a one-out single to left center by Garza.
Freshman Ben Walsh">Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over five innings pitched, while striking out six. Garza earned the win on the mound after striking out 14 of the 18 batters he retired, while giving up just three hits over six innings. Charbonneau had two of Le Moyne's three hits, while Gonzalez and Garza each had two of Philadelphia's five hits.
Le Moyne (5-8) returns to action on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Shippensburg for the start of a three-day, four-game series.
