SOFTBALL EDGED BY PACE, 2-0, IN OPENER OF KEY SERIES

Briarcliff, N.Y. – Caitlin McCann tossed a five-hit shutout to lead Pace University to a 2-0 win over the Le Moyne College softball team on Friday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Pace Field.

The Setters (16-20, 13-9 NE-10, 10-6 SW) took advantage of a Le Moyne error in the first inning to score the only run they would need. Center fielder Shelby Yung led off with a single to center field. On a pickoff attempt by the Dolphins, the ball was thrown out of play as Yung dove back into first base, which allowed Yung to advance to third. Shortstop Jeane Drury followed with a single to left field to drive in Yung with the unearned run.

The Dolphins put runners on the corners with two outs in the top of the sixth, but McCann recorded a strikeout to end the threat.

After 16 straight Setters were retired, Pace added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning on two hits. Yung doubled to center with one out and then moved to third on a bunt single by Drury. After Drury stole second, freshman center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) robbed first baseman Natalie Gellos of a hit to the gap with a diving catch, but Yung was able to tag up and score Pace's second run.

Senior lefty Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) recorded six strikeouts over six innings, but was saddled with the loss after yielding two runs (one earned) on four hits. Riley recorded three of Le Moyne's five hits in the contest. McCann registered eight strikeouts, including six over the first four frames, to earn her 10th win of the season.

Le Moyne (23-15, 13-7 NE-10, 10-6 SW) and Pace close out the regular season on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) with a doubleheader that will determine the seedings for the Southwest Division of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships. The top seed in the division will host next week's six-team tournament. Prior to that, each division's third seed will host the fourth seed on Tuesday to determine which teams join the top two seeds from each division. Please see below for the scenarios of where the Dolphins can finish.
