Syracuse, N.Y. – Daniel Castano headed in a corner kick with 1:17 left in the second overtime period to lift Saint Michael's College to a 1-0 victory over the Le Moyne College men's soccer team in the Northeast-10 Conference for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
Playing in a driving rain throughout the 109 minutes, play was mainly contained between the two penalty boxes. The first half featured three shots by each team, but only one shot apiece on goal, with both of those coming in the first 12 minutes. In the second half, the Purple Knights took two of the half's three shots, both of which came in the final three and one-half minutes. The first of the two was best scoring opportunity in regulation as Simon Rodriguez headed the ball towards the right post, but freshman goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) was able to dive and punch the ball out of play.
Just under three minutes into the first overtime period, Aaron DaCosta found himself in a one-on-one situation with Beaury at the top left corner of the goal box, but Beaury was able to make a sliding stop on DaCosta's point-blank shot attempt. Just over three minutes later, senior midfielder
Zachary MacNabb (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/UNC Pembroke) was able to put Le Moyne's first shot on goal in over 38 minutes, but it was right at Saint Michael's goalkeeper Nicco Roque, who easily knocked the ball out of the air.
The Dolphins had their best scoring chance of the contest just over four minutes into the second overtime period off a corner kick, but senior back
Trevor Creedon (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) put his shot off the right post.
After the Dolphins cleared away a Saint Michael's corner kick from the left side, the Purple Knights were awarded a corner kick from the right side. Josh Vlasich, the reigning Northeast-10 Player of the Week, served the ball in front of the goal, where Castano headed the ball from the top of the goal box inside the right post for the game-winner at the 108:43 mark.
Beaury, who had his season-opening scoreless streak snapped at 378:43, made three saves in suffering his first collegiate loss. Roque, the reigning Northeast-10 Goalkeeper of the Week, extended his season-opening scoreless streak to 378:43 by recording three saves to post his fourth straight shutout victory. The Purple Knights ended the contest with a 7-6 shot advantage, while posting a 9-7 edge in corner kicks after taking just five in their first three games of the season.
Le Moyne (3-1, 0-1 NE-10), which fell to the Purple Knights for the first time in 20 all-time meetings (17-1-2), hits the road for the first time on Saturday at Saint Anselm College at 1:00 p.m.
