Benjamin Spoor (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) each recorded a singles victory and teamed for a doubles victory to lead the Le Moyne College men's tennis team to a 5-4 season-opening win over Philadelphia University on Friday afternoon at the Skytop Tennis Courts.
Philadelphia took a 2-1 lead in the match following doubles play. Doney and Spoor picked up Le Moyne's first point of the match at the second doubles spot with an 8-5 win over Long Vo and Sean DeBlasio. Nicolas Affolter and Celso de Vera Rehber won a back-and-forth match at first doubles, 9-8 (7-5), over sophomore
James Gayvert (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and freshman
Jason Barton (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee). At third doubles, James Pollard and Juan Velosa recorded an 8-4 win over redshirt junior
Stephane Legris (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury/Adirondack C.C.) and sophomore
Adam Celeta (Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham Regional).
Doney earned his first collegiate singles victory by registering a 6-1, 6-1 win over Pollard at the third spot. At fourth singles, Spoor tallied his sixth career win with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Velosa. Legris picked up his first win as a Dolphin at the fifth spot, 6-1, 6-0, over Vo. Gayvert, a nine-match winner as a freshman, clinched the match for the Dolphins with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at first singles over Affolter. At sixth singles, DeBlasio recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win over Celeta for Philadelphia's first singles win. In the closest match of the afternoon, de Vera Rehber rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at second singles against Barton.
Le Moyne (1-0) opens Northeast-10 Conference action on Sunday against Franklin Pierce University at 10:00 a.m. at the Skytop Tennis Courts.
