Syracuse, N.Y. – Daniel Ruiz scored two goals to lead fifth-ranked Southern Connecticut State University to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the Le Moyne College men's soccer team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
The Dolphins opened the game's scoring just over 20 minutes into the contest. Sophomore back
James Goodridge (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) carried the ball down the left side of the field before sending a pass from just outside the left edge of the penalty box in front of the goal. Graduate student forward
Fabian Egger (Planegg, Bavaria / Feodor-Lynen Gymnasium/Webber International) raced into the box and was able to get the tip of his foot on the ball to redirect it into the lower right corner of the net for his team-best fourth goal of the season.
The Owls, who moved up to fifth in the NSCAA/Continental Tire poll this week after being ranked seventh each of the last two weeks, evened the score at one apiece just over four minutes later. After the Dolphins were whistled for a hand ball in the center of the field, Ruiz placed the direct kick into the center of the goal from 25 yards out.
The Dolphins had a breakaway six minutes into the second half, but senior midfielder
Zachary MacNabb (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/UNC Pembroke) kicked the ball right at Southern Connecticut goalkeeper Noah Veronier, who easily knocked the ball out of play.
Southern Connecticut State (7-0, 5-0 NE-10) netted the game-winning goal midway through the second half. Off a failed clear attempt by the Dolphins, an Owl sent a pass towards the endline on the right side of the field. Kevin Joslyn beat his defender to the ball and chipped a pass in front of the goal, where a charging Ruiz was able to knock the ball off one bounce into the back of the net from one foot in front of the goal line.
The Dolphins had three shots over the final 13 minutes of action, but only one was on target, which Veronier turned away.
Freshman goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) registered three saves in suffering his second loss of the season between the pipes. Veronier finished the game with four saves to remain unbeaten at 7-0. The Owls recorded a 12-9 advantage in shots, while the Dolphins held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
Le Moyne (6-2, 3-2 NE-10), which has dropped back-to-back home games after winning its first three, visits Franklin Pierce University on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
