Syracuse, N.Y. – Ellie Swan scored with 29 seconds left to give Roberts Wesleyan College a 3-2 season-opening win over the Le Moyne College women's soccer team on Thursday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
The Dolphins struck first by finding the back of the net just under 26 minutes into the contest. Sophomore all-conference forward
Rachel Terry (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) sent a pass from the top of the penalty box to junior midfielder
Kelly Ristoff (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Siena), who slipped a shot into the net from six yards out on the left side.
The Redhawks knotted the score at one with just 100 seconds left in the opening half. During a scrum in front of the goal following a Roberts Wesleyan corner kick, Orla Martin deposited the ball into the back of the net from three yards out.
Roberts Wesleyan took its first lead of the game 6:45 into the second half as Bella Mitrevski scored from 12 yards out off a breakaway up the middle of the field.
Following 31 and one-half minutes of scoreless action, the Dolphins were awarded a penalty kick after Ristoff was taken down in the top left corner of the penalty box. Terry stepped up and buried her third career penalty kick to tie the score at two with 6:40 remaining.
Swan, who scored the game-winner in last year's 3-0 win by Roberts Wesleyan, gave the Redhawks the victory with 29 seconds left by slipping a shot from 12 yards out underneath junior goalkeeper
Tori Corsaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and inside the right post after taking a feed from Mitrevski.
The Dolphins were unable to get a shot off to potentially tie the score before time expired.
Corsaro registered one save in the loss for the Dolphins. Marissa Sell, an all-conference performer on the basketball court for the Redhawks and last year's ECC Preseason Player of the Year, made five saves to earn the win between the pipes. Roberts Wesleyan had an 11-10 edge in shots, while holding a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
