Syracuse, N.Y. – Redshirt senior midfielder
Cal Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) tallied five points to lead the Le Moyne College men's soccer team to a 4-1 win over Stonehill College on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field.
After taking six of the game's first eight shots, including a pair of shots on goal, the Dolphins struck for their first goal in the 26th minute. Off a corner kick from the right side, Filtch lofted the ball in front of the net. Junior back
Ryan Matthews (Dublin, Ireland/Dublin Institute of Technology) ran into the goal box and knocked the ball into the net at the 25:16 mark for his second goal of the season. The assist gave Filtch 10 on the season, making him just the fourth Dolphin to record double-digit assists in a single season and he is the first to do so since 1996.
Only 86 seconds later, the Dolphins doubled their lead. Off a Filtch corner kick from the left side, a Stonehill defender slapped the ball out of the air, resulting in a penalty kick for the Dolphins. Filtch took the attempt and buried the shot into the middle of the goal for his sixth tally of the campaign.
Neither team was able to put a shot on goal over the last 18 minutes of the half as the Dolphins took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
Stonehill, which rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Dolphins in the regular-season finale last year, cut into its deficit four and one-half minutes into the second half. Following a Le Moyne foul near midfield, Evan Devanny sent the free kick into the right side of the penalty box. After allowing the ball to bounce once, Matthew Mesiti lofted the ball into the upper left corner of the net for his first career goal with 49:29 elapsed in the game.
The Dolphins were awarded penalty kick at the 62:32 mark after a Stonehill defender pulled down a Le Moyne player from behind near the top of the box. Once again, Filtch took the attempt and slotted the shot inside the right post. The goal gave Filtch 24 points on the season, making him just the 20th player in the program's history to record at least 24 points in a season and the first to do so since Angelo Reina '11 during the 2009 season.
Le Moyne finished off the game's scoring with 16:31 left. From the left side, sophomore midfielder
Adam Resetarits (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) threw the ball into the left side of the penalty box, where it was headed towards the center of the goal by Matthews. Senior back
Jack Ball (Sunbury, Middlesex/Bishop Wand/Bryant & Stratton) ran into the goal box and knocked the ball into the net for his fourth tally of the campaign.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) registered two saves in the second half to earn his ninth win of the season. Luke Besse made three saves in the loss for the Skyhawks. Le Moyne posted a 13-7 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 margin in the first half, while each team took nine corner kicks.
