Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior midfielder/forward
Rossel Cacho (Corozal La Ceiba, Honduras/Brighton (Mass.)/Bunker Hill C.C.) scored the game-winning goal 3:21 into the second overtime period to give the Le Moyne College men's soccer team a 4-3 victory over Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field.
The Dolphins opened the game's scoring just 3:40 into the contest as redshirt sophomore midfielder
Marcello Palucci (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep/Florida International) put a shot from just outside of the top right corner of the penalty box into the upper left corner of the net.
Le Moyne, which won a game when allowing at least three goals for the first time since a 5-3 victory against St. John Fisher late in the 1982 season (0-144-1 in the span when allowing at least three goals), doubled its lead in the 22nd minute off a corner kick. From the right corner, redshirt senior midfielder
Cal Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) sent the ball into the goal box, where it bounced and kicked into the back of the net by senior back
Jack Ball (Sunbury, Middlesex/Bishop Wand/Bryant & Stratton) for his seventh goal of the year.
Franklin Pierce cut into its deficit by virtue of a Le Moyne handball at the top of the penalty box at the 34:03 mark. Charlie Madden deposited the penalty kick into the left side of the net for his second goal of the season.
Just over five minutes into the second half, the Ravens knotted the score at two apiece. From the right side of the penalty box, Andrew LaVoie sent a pass across the top of the box to Gabriel Batista, who placed a shot into the upper left corner of the goal for his first goal of the campaign.
The Dolphins regained the lead less than four minutes later. After dribbling the ball to the center of the field from the right side, sophomore midfielder
Adam Resetarits (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) sent a pass into the left side of the penalty box. Filtch ran onto the ball and one-touched a centering feed to graduate student forward
Fabian Egger (Planegg, Germany/Feodor-Lynen Gymnasium/Webber International), who drilled the ball into the bottom left corner of the net from six yards out for his fourth goal of the year with 53:54 elapsed. With the assist, Filtch broke the program's single-season assists record with his 13th. The previous record of 12 was set by Lee Williams '98 during the 1996 season.
Franklin Pierce tied the score once again with just 2:33 remaining in regulation. Batista sent a pass from the right side in front of the net. Marius Preber was able to get to the ball before the goalkeeper could and headed the ball into the open net for his eighth goal of the year.
Following a scoreless first overtime period, in which sophomore goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) had to push a shot over the crossbar midway through the period to keep the game tied, the Dolphins netted the game-winner. Following a Franklin Pierce foul 25 yards out in the middle of the field at the 103:12 mark, Filtch hit the crossbar with the free kick. Off the bounce, Cacho volleyed the ball out of the air and into the upper left corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season. With his third assist of the game, Filtch moves into second place on the program's career assists chart with 22, while he is 19th in total points with 44. On the program's single-season points list, Filtch is tied for 11th with 28 total points.
Beaury finished the game with three saves to earn his 11th victory of the season between the pipes. Jordan LeGuyader posted five saves in the loss for the Ravens. Le Moyne registered a 19-10 advantage in shots, while taking 13 of the game's 16 corner kicks.
Le Moyne (11-4-1, 7-4-1 NE-10), which improved to 2-4-1 against the Ravens in overtime games, closes out the regular season on Friday at home against the University of New Haven at 3:00 p.m. Prior to the opening kickoff, the six-member senior class of Ball, Filtch, Egger,
Mark Gentile (Walworth, N.Y./Wayne),
Nick Rauscher (Henrietta, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and
Anthony Scaravillo (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) will be honored by the Dolphin Athletic Association for their contributions to the program.
Entering the final game of the regular season, the Dolphins are in a three-way tie for fifth place with Bentley and Saint Rose with 22 points each, while Southern Connecticut State has 25 points to place fourth. The Dolphins can finish as high as a tie for fourth in the conference standings, but can only claim as high as the fifth seed. The top eight teams in the final standings will qualify for the Northeast-10 Conference Championship and the top four seeds will host a first round game on Tuesday, November 3.
