Colchester, N.Y. – Redshirt senior midfielder
Cal Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) dished out three assists for the second time in three games to lead the Le Moyne College men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory at Saint Michael's College on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Duffy Field.
Following a four-shot burst by the Purple Knights in a span of 83 seconds midway through the first half, the Dolphins struck for their first goal of the afternoon. Off a corner kick from the left side, Filtch served the ball in front of the net, where senior back
Jack Ball (Sunbury, Middlesex/Bishop Wand/Bryant & Stratton) headed the ball inside the right post at the 27:46 mark for his third goal of the season.
Just over 15 minutes later, the Dolphins doubled their lead. Junior midfielder
Callum Donnelly (Edinburgh, Scotland/James Gillespies/Webber International) fed the ball from the right side into the penalty box to Filtch, who knocked it through two Saint Michael's defenders to junior midfielder
Rossel Cacho (Corozal La Ceiba, Honduras/Brighton (Mass.)/Bunker Hill C.C.), who was able to tap the ball into the back of the net for his first goal as a Dolphin. The goal snapped Le Moyne's run of eight straight tallies that came off set pieces (six corners, two free kicks) over the team's last six games.
Each team registered four shots in the opening 25 minutes of the second half, including two by each side that had to be saved by the goalkeeper.
The Dolphins took advantage of another corner kick, their seventh of the game, to record their third goal of the contest. With their roles reversed from the team's second goal, Filtch sent a short corner kick to Donnelly, who chipped the ball through the penalty box to the far post, where junior back
Ryan Matthews (Dublin, Ireland/Dublin Institute of Technology) was able to put the ball into the open net at the 70:18 mark for his first tally as a Dolphin.
Filtch has been a part of each of Le Moyne's last 11 goals (3 goals, 8 assists) and has picked up an assist on each of the last seven goals. After having not been accomplished once in the last 13 seasons, Filtch tallied three assists in the same game for the second time in eight days. His nine assists on the season are tied for the fourth-most in a season in the program's history and are the most by a Dolphin since Lee Williams tallied 12 in 1996. His 17 career assists rank in a three-way tie for fifth place on the program's career chart and are the most since Jesse Carr '12 recorded 20 between the 2008 and 2011 campaigns.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) registered two second-half saves to earn his 19th career win and 13th career shutout between the pipes. With the shutout, Beaury moved into sole possession of fifth place on the program's career chart. Nicco Roque recorded seven saves, including five in the second half, in the setback for the Purple Knights. Le Moyne posted a 16-11 edge in shots, including an 11-5 advantage in the second half, while taking eight of the game's 10 corner kicks.
Le Moyne (7-3, 4-3 NE-10), which suffered its only loss in 21 all-time meetings with the Purple Knights last year (18-1-2), plays its second-to-last road game of the regular season on Saturday at Bentley University at 10:00 a.m.
