Albany, N.Y. – Jamal Nwaniemeka scored 18 points to lead East Stroudsburg University to an 85-62 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in the season-opener for both teams on the first day of the Northeast-10 Challenge presented by Hilton Garden Inn-Albany Medical Center at Saint Rose's Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
Sophomore guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) led three Dolphins in double figures with a career-high 18 points. Junior guard
Tyquan Rolon (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham/Mohawk Valley C.C.) and sophomore forward
Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) each tallied 10 points in their Dolphin debuts.
Nwaniemeka added four assists and four rebounds to his team-high point total. Will Brown registered 16 points and two rebounds, while Rasheed Moore posted 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds, including five on the offensive end. Steve Harris was the fourth Warrior in double digits with 13 points, while adding seven rebounds and three assists.
It was a game of runs to start the contest. East Stroudsburg scored the first five points, while the Dolphins countered with the next six. The Warriors answered back with eight straight to open up a 13-6 lead 4:59 into the game. Le Moyne charged back with 10 of the next 12, including seven straight on the back end, to take a 16-15 lead at the 9:56 mark. East Stroudsburg responded with an 8-2 spurt to regain the lead for good.
After Le Moyne got within 25-23 with 5:49 left on a Hyland three-pointer and a Kaigler lay-up, the Warriors scored eight straight points to pull away. Wes Cherry started the run with four points in 17 seconds.
Senior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) got the Dolphins within nine with 24 seconds left, but Nwaniemeka nailed a three-pointer with six seconds left to give the Warriors a 43-31 lead at halftime.
After Nwaniemeka made a lay-up to start the second half's scoring, the Dolphins tallied seven of the next nine points to get within single digits for the final time. Rolon buried a three-pointer, Kaigler had a fast-break dunk and then sophomore guard
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) made a fast-break lay-up to make the score 47-38 with 16:47 left.
East Stroudsburg responded with eight straight points and 21 of the next 23 to blow the game open. Nwaniemeka and Moore each had five points in the span as six Warriors scored in the stretch.
Following a span of 7:17 without a field goal, the Dolphins ran off 12 of the next 16 points to trim their deficit to 20 with 5:53 left. Rolon and Hyland each had five of the points, while Lovell made a jump shot.
The Warriors pushed their margin back to 27 with 11 of the next 15 points over 4:04. Brown led the charge with five points as five players scored.
Sophomore forward
Zach Quattro (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) nailed a pair of three-pointers as Le Moyne tallied six of the last eight points to deliver the final margin.
