Albany, N.Y. – Senior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to an 84-80 come-from-behind victory over Bloomfield College on Sunday afternoon on the second day of the Northeast-10 Challenge hosted by The College of Saint Rose at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
Lovell tied his career high with 10 made field goals en route to his 25 points, 14 of which he scored in the first half, while he added four rebounds and four assists. Sophomore guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) registered 17 points, including six free throws in the final 15 seconds, four assists, three steals and three rebounds. Junior guard
Tyquan Rolon (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham/Mohawk Valley C.C.) hit all five of his shots as he netted 14 points, 10 of which came in the second half, while adding four rebounds and three assists. Junior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) came off the bench to record 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting and grab a team-best five rebounds.
Nick Davidson led five Bears in double figures with 18 points, half of which came from the free throw line. Claude Blue tallied 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and posted three steals, while Rakwan Kelly recorded 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Ignacio Diez and Ahmid Williams finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The teams went back and forth over the opening 10 minutes, with the Bears taking a 21-20 lead. Lovell led the Dolphins in the span with seven points, while Davidson and Robert Lewis led the Bears in the stretch with five points each.
Following two minutes of scoreless action, the Bears tallied 10 of the next 12 points to take a nine-point lead. Davidson had the first six points of the run.
Le Moyne countered with 15 of the next 23 points to get within two points in the final minute of the half. Lovell had seven of the points, Hyland buried a three-pointer and Buczek tallied the last five to make it 39-37 with 58 seconds left.
Kelly made two free throws with three seconds left to give Bloomfield a 41-37 lead at halftime.
After Bloomfield scored the first three points of the second half to extend its lead to 44-37, the Dolphins responded with seven straight points to knot the score for the first of eight times in the second half. Sophomore guard
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) started the run with a lay-up, Rolon followed with a lay-up and then he tied with score with a three-pointer at the 16:49 mark.
Following ties at 46 and 48, Diez nailed a three-pointer to start an 11-7 push by the Bears.
After a conventional three-point play by Blue to give Bloomfield a 59-55 lead with 9:02 remaining, Le Moyne rattled off nine straight points. Hyland had the first six to put the Dolphins in front and then sophomore forward
Zach Quattro (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) drilled a three-pointer off a feed from Hyland for a 64-59 advantage with 7:07 left.
Bloomfield answered back with seven straight points and 10 of the next 12 to take a 69-66 lead with 3:22 to play. The Bears scored eight of the 10 points from the foul line.
Lovell followed with a lay-up and then Rolon drilled a three-pointer to put the Dolphins back in front.
Following ties at 71 and 73, Lovell drained a three-pointer with 1:09 left to give the Dolphins the lead for good. Rolon pushed the margin to 78-73 with 27 seconds left before Williams answered with a three-pointer five seconds later. Following four Hyland free throws around a Bloomfield free throw, Williams nailed another three-pointer with four seconds left to get the Bears within two. Hyland closed out the scoring with two seconds left by converting two more foul shots.
Le Moyne (1-1), which overcame an eight-point deficit to defeat the Bears by four points for the second straight year at the Northeast-10 Challenge, opens Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday at home against the University of New Haven at 7:00 p.m.
