Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) tallied a career-best 20 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 68-64 win over the University of New Haven on Wednesday night in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams at Ted Grant Court.
Hyland, whose previous high of 18 came four days ago against East Stroudsburg, netted 13 of his points in the second half, while he pulled down a career-high six rebounds. Sophomore forward
Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) registered career-highs of 16 points, eight rebounds (five offensive) and two blocks in his home debut. Junior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) posted 12 points in 21 minutes off the bench, while classmate
Tyquan Rolon (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham/Mohawk Valley C.C.) recorded nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds in his home debut.
Jemal Mosley led the Chargers in the loss with 27 points, 15 of which he scored in the first half, while adding five assists and four steals. Samir McDaniels recorded 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Levy Gillespie came off the bench to score 10 points.
After the teams traded points over the opening six minutes of the game, resulting in an 11-10 New Haven lead, the Chargers scored seven straight points to open up their largest lead of the game with 11:00 left. Mosley had the first five points and Gillespie capped the streak with two free throws.
The Dolphins countered with seven straight points to get back within one. Buczek made a lay-up and a three-pointer and then Kaigler knocked down a jumper with 7:28 to go.
Following two and one-half minutes of back-and-forth play, the Dolphins rattled off 14 straight points to open up an 11 point lead. Senior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) had a pair of lay-ups, Rolon hit three free throws and then buried a three-pointer, Kaigler made a lay-up and then Hyland capped the run with two free throws with four seconds left.
Mosley hit a running three-pointer at the buzzer to get New Haven within 37-29 at halftime.
Following alternating baskets over the first 4:16 of the first half, the Dolphins posted an 8-2 run to extend their lead to a game-high 12 points (51-39) with 11 minutes remaining. Buczek made a lay-up and a three-pointer around a three-pointer by Hyland in the span.
New Haven responded with an 11-3 run over 2:12 to get back within four with 8:11 to play. Tommy Hunt, Michael Bourke and Mosley each hit three-pointers in the streak.
After Kaigler pushed the margin back to six with a lay-up, the Chargers made three foul shots to trim their deficit to three with 4:14 left.
Hyland connected on a pair of three-pointers with the Dolphins only leading by three to extend the lead, but Gillespie made two free throws and Mosley had a steal and lay-up to get New Haven within two with 16.4 seconds to go.
Hyland made four free throws around a lay-up by McDaniels to close out the game's scoring.
Le Moyne (2-1, 1-0 NE-10), which has won its Northeast-10 opener four years in a row, returns to action on Saturday at Pace University at 3:30 p.m.
