Pleasantville, N.Y. – Pace University scored the last eight points of the game to record a 65-60 come-from-behind victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Goldstein Fitness Center.
Junior guard
Tyquan Rolon (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham/Mohawk Valley C.C.) led the Dolphins with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, while adding two assists and two steals. Sophomore guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) was the only other Dolphin in double digits with 13 points.
Victor Jusino led five Setters in double figures with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. Shelton Mickell tallied 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Bryan Rivers, who scored the game-winning basket, and Ryan Peterson each finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Rivers added four assists. Kyle Pearson turned in a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
After the Dolphins jumped out to a 5-2 lead, the countered with six straight points and 11 of the next 15 to take a 13-9 advantage with 12:23 left in the opening half. Peterson tallied six of the points in the span, while senior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) had all four of Le Moyne's points.
Following a three-pointer by Evan Gordinier to put the Setters up 19-18 with 8:57 left, the Dolphins tallied eight of the next 10 points to take a five point lead. Hyland started the streak with a deep three-pointer to beat the shot clock and sophomore forward
Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) followed with a pair of shots in the paint and then a free throw with 4:37 remaining.
After the teams traded points over the next 2:25, Peterson and Pearson each made two free throws to knot the score at 34 with 45 seconds left in the stanza.
Sophomore guard
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) connected on a pair of foul shots with 26 seconds to go to give the Dolphins a 36-34 lead at halftime.
Lovell opened the scoring in the second half with a three-pointer, but Pace answered with nine of the next 11 points to take a 43-41 lead with 13:17 left. Jusino started the run with a jumper and then Mickell scored seven straight points.
The Dolphins countered with an 8-1 jaunt to regain their five point advantage. Kaigler scored in the paint, Hyland drained a three-pointer and junior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) put the Dolphins up 49-44 with a tip-in with 9:15 to play.
The teams then traded points with ties coming at 52 and 54. Hyland then connected on back-to-back jump shots to put Le Moyne in front, 58-54, with 2:22 remaining.
Following a conventional three-point play by Jusino to get Pace within one, Sangster converted two foul shots for a 60-57 lead with 1:09 left.
Jusino made a jumper with 52 seconds to go to trim his team's deficit back to one and then Rivers made a put-back lay-up to give Pace the lead with 29 seconds to play after a steal by Peterson. Mickell and Pearson each made two free throws in the final 11 seconds to close out the game's scoring.
Le Moyne (2-2, 1-1 NE-10), which fell to the Setters for the first time in four years, snapping a streak of seven straight wins, returns to action on Friday against Gannon University at 7:30 p.m. at the 32nd Annual Gary Miller Classic.
