MEN’S BASKETBALL EDGED BY GANNON, 58-56, DESPITE SECOND-HALF RALLY

Erie, Pa. – Jean Yves Toupane tallied 17 points as Gannon University held on to record a 58-56 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Friday evening in the second semifinal matchup of the 32nd Annual Gary Miller Classic at the Hammermill Center.

Junior guard Tyquan Rolon (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham/Mohawk Valley C.C.) led the Dolphins in the setback with 21 points, 14 of which came in the second half, while adding five rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Senior guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) added 11 points and five rebounds.

Toupane recorded 11 of his 17 points in the first half, while finishing the contest with nine rebounds. Isaiah Eisendorf scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Kevin Kuteyi netted 11 points.

After Kuteyi gave Gannon a 3-2 lead with a three-pointer, the Dolphins tallied eight of the next 10 points to take their largest lead of the game. Following five points from three players, Rolon buried a three-pointer for a 10-5 lead with 15:13 left in the first half.

Following a jumper by sophomore forward Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) with 12:11 left to give the Dolphins a 12-8 lead, the Golden Knights answered with 12 straight points and 27 of the last 33 points of the half to take a 35-18 lead into the intermission. Toupane recorded 11 of the 27 points, while Tony Boykins added six and Kuteyi finished the scoring in the half with a three-pointer.

Gannon opened the scoring in the second half with a jumper by Kuteyi to take a game-high 19-point lead.

Following a basket by Eisendorf with 17:56 left to put the Golden Knights up 39-20, the Dolphins rattled off 10 straight points and 14 of the next 16 to get within seven points. Rolon had the first five points, sophomore guard Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) scored three points and then sophomore guard Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) hit a jumper off a feed from Sangster to make the score 39-30 with 13:42 remaining. After a Toupane lay-up, Rolon made two free throws and a lay-up with 12:26 to go.

Gannon countered with seven of the next eight points to push its lead back to 13 with 10:46 to play. Toupane started the spurt with a jumper, Marcus Jones followed with a three-pointer and then Eisendorf made a jumper in the paint.

After Dogan nailed a three-pointer with 6:02 left to give the Golden Knights a 53-40 advantage, Le Moyne scored 11 straight points over 5:02 to get within two points. Following a free throw from Rolon and two from Kaigler, who played for the Golden Knights last year, junior forward Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) tipped the ball in to make the score 53-45 with 4:09 to go. Buczek added two free throws 93 seconds later to make it a two-possession game. Lovell got the Dolphins within four with a coast-to-coast lay-up with 1:25 remaining. After Gannon turned the ball over, Rolon made a shot from the left block with 59.5 seconds left to get Le Moyne within 53-51.

Dogan snapped his team's scoreless drought of 5:26 by hitting the front end of a "1-and-1" with 36 seconds to play. However, he missed the second and Rolon grabbed the rebound. Out of a timeout, Hyland drew a foul with 15 seconds left and then converted both foul shots to get Le Moyne within one point.

Eisendorf answered with two free throws two seconds later. Lovell then rushed the ball up court and made a lay-up with just over five seconds left to make it a one-point game again. Toupane finished off his team's scoring with two free throws less than one second later.

Lovell drew a foul with two seconds left and made the first free throw. After intentionally missing the second attempt, he got the rebound. His desperation three-pointer at the buzzer from the left wing was rejected by Dogan to preserve the victory for the Golden Knights.

Le Moyne (2-3), which fell on the first day of the Gary Miller Classic for the first time in three years, takes on Alderson Broaddus University on Saturday in the consolation game at 5:30 p.m.
