Syracuse, N.Y. – Five players scored in double figures to lead Syracuse University to a 97-58 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in an exhibition game on Monday night at Jim Boeheim Court in the Carrier Dome.
Senior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) led the Dolphins in the contest with team-highs of 16 points, including 10 in the second half, seven assists and six rebounds. Sophomore guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) recorded 11 points and four rebounds, while sophomore forward
Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) tallied 10 points and pulled down six rebounds, including four on the offensive end.
Michael Gbinije led the Orange with 21 points, including 12 in the first half, while adding four assists and three rebounds. DaJuan Coleman tallied 13 of his 15 points in the second half and pulled down seven rebounds, while Malachi Richardson netted 11 of his 13 points in the first half and grabbed seven rebounds. Kaleb Joseph and Franklin Howard came off the bench to record 11 and 10 points, respectively. Tyler Roberson grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, while scoring eight points.
The Dolphins opened the game's scoring on a jumper by Kaigler 42 seconds into the contest.
The Orange answered with seven straight points to take the lead, which they would not relinquish.
After the Dolphins got within 17-14 on a free throw by junior guard
Tyquan Rolon (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham/Mohawk Valley C.C.), the Orange recorded a 21-7 run to take their largest lead of the half. Richardson nailed three consecutive three-pointers around a Lovell jumper to give the Orange a 26-16 edge. Following a Lovell floater, Gbinije connected on his fourth three-pointer of the half. After the Dolphins got within 33-21 on a three-point play by Rolon, Tyler Lydon made a jumper and then Howard buried a three-pointer for a 38-21 advantage with 5:36 left in the half.
Le Moyne answered with 11 of the next 14 points to trim its deficit to single digits. Hyland nailed a three-pointer to start the run, Rolon followed with two free throws and then sophomore forward
Zach Quattro (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) drilled consecutive three-pointers from the left wing to force a Syracuse timeout.
Syracuse made three free throws over the last 2:22 before Lovell hit a jumper to get the Dolphins within 44-34 at halftime.
The Orange scored the first 21 points of the second half over seven minutes to pull away. Coleman had nine points in the run and Joseph hit back-to-back three-pointers, while three other players each had two points.
The teams then traded baskets over the remainder of the game as Syracuse's lead bounced between 29 and 34 points until the final minute. In addition to Lovell's 10 points in the span, five other Dolphins got in the scorebook.
Le Moyne returns to the court on Friday for its second exhibition game against a Division-I opponent as the Dolphins take on the University of Michigan at 7:00 p.m.
