West Haven, Conn. – Tommy Hunt hit a three-pointer with 6.9 seconds left to give the University of New Haven a 57-56 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Tuesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Charger Gymnasium.
Junior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) led all scorers in the contest with 22 points, including 12 in the second half, while adding four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Senior forward
Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) was the only other Dolphin to reach double figures with 10 points. Sophomore forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go along with nine points.
Jemal Mosley led the Chargers offensively with 16 points, including 12 in the second half, while grabbing four rebounds and dishing out three assists. Samir McDaniels and Levy Gillespie each added 11 points, while McDaniels pulled down seven rebounds, including five on the offensive end. Eric Anderson, one of the best all-around players in the Northeast-10, grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with six points and two blocks.
After the Dolphins missed on the front end of a "1-and-1" with 20 seconds left, they gave up one of their final two fouls to give with 12 seconds left. Following a timeout from each team, Mosley took a pass in the paint and kicked it out to Hunt on the left wing, where he buried the go-ahead three-pointer with 6.9 seconds remaining for a 57-55 lead.
Lovell raced up court and drew a foul along the right sideline with 2.7 seconds left. He connected on the front of the "1-and-1", but his second attempt hit off the back iron and was pulled down by Mosley, who was fouled with 0.8 seconds left. After a timeout, the Chargers were able to toss the ball into the six-foot, eight-inch Anderson to run out the clock for the victory.
The Dolphins opened the game by scoring eight of the first 10 points over four and one-half minutes. Romich had four of the points, while Buczek and junior forward
Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) each had two.
After Gillespie hit his first of three first-half three-pointers to get the Chargers within 16-11 with 9:39 left in the half, the Dolphins scored seven straight points to open up their first double-digit lead of the game. Lovell made two free throws, Buczek made a lay-up and then Mahoney drained a three-pointer.
New Haven scored four straight points to get back within eight, but the Dolphins recorded another 7-0 spurt to take their largest lead of the game. Freshman guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) started the streak with a three-pointer, Lovell made a fast-break lay-up and then Buczek made a lay-up for Le Moyne's last points of the half with 3:09 left.
The Chargers cut their deficit to seven at the intermission, 30-23, with the final eight points of the stanza. Anderson made a jumper before Gillespie connected on back-to-back three-pointers.
After Romich pushed Le Moyne's lead to nine just 39 seconds into the second half, the Chargers rattled off 12 straight points and 14 of the next 15 for their largest lead of the game. Hunt started the run with a three-pointer, Mosley scored four points, McDaniels nailed a three-pointer for the lead and Joshua Guddemi made a lay-up. After a Buczek free throw, Mosley made a lay-up for a 37-33 advantage with 14:38 left.
The Dolphins countered with eight straight points and 15 of the next 19 to regain a seven-point edge. Hyland, Lovell, Romich and Buczek each scored two points in the 8-0 spurt, while Hyland capped the 15-4 run with a three-pointer for a 48-41 lead with 8:44 to go.
New Haven answered with nine of the next 11 points to even the game at 50-apiece with 4:19 remaining. Mosley had the first four points, Gillespie made a lay-up and then Jayson Cethoute drained a three-pointer from the right corner to tie the game.
Lovell scored four points 60 seconds apart to give the Dolphins the lead back with 3:44 left. McDaniels made two free throws with 2:03 remaining to trim New Haven's deficit to two, but Lovell followed with a free throw with 1:36 left. Mosley then hit a jumper with 1:15 to go to make it a one-point game.
Following missed three-pointers by Mahoney (52 seconds) and Mosley (26 seconds), Lovell was sent to the foul line, where he missed the aforementioned free throw with 20 seconds to go.
Le Moyne (14-10, 8-9 NE-10), which dips into a tie with the Chargers for third place in the Southwest Division standings with three games to go, returns to action on Saturday at The College of Saint Rose at 3:30 p.m.
