MEN’S BASKETBALL UPENDED BY SAINT ROSE, 82-71, IN UPSTATE CHALLENGE MATCHUP

Albany, N.Y. – Five Dolphins scored in double figures, but the Le Moyne College men's basketball team fell to The College of Saint Rose, 82-71, on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.

With the victory, Saint Rose claims one-half point in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions. Through 11 sports and 13 contests and with four points remaining, the fourth installment of the Challenge is tied, 5.5-5.5.

Junior guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) and freshman guard Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) each tallied 15 points to lead the Dolphins, while Lovell had five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Freshman guard Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) posted 12 points and four rebounds before fouling out. Senior forward Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) and sophomore forward Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) each recorded 11 points, while Romich added a team-high six rebounds.

Freshman Jack Jones led the Golden Knights in the victory with 21 points, including 13 in the second half, while grabbing five rebounds and blocking two shots. Jalaun Taylor came off the bench to register 17 points (13 in the first half), seven rebounds and two steals. Chris Dorgler posted 14 points (12 in the second half), seven assists, six rebounds and four steals.

The teams went back and forth over the opening nine minutes of the contest with the margin bouncing between a three-point Saint Rose lead and a four-point Le Moyne lead.

After Buczek gave the Dolphins an 11-7 lead, Saint Rose scored 13 of the next 16 points to take a 20-14 advantage. Taylor scored seven of the points, while three other Golden Knights scored two points each.

Following four points from Sangster and Lovell, the Golden Knights used an 11-2 run over 3:20 to take their largest lead of the half. Taylor had four points, Jones capped the streak with a three-pointer and two others scored two points apiece.

The Dolphins closed out the half with a 12-5 run over the last 3:12 to get within 36-33 at halftime. Hyland hit a pair of three-pointers in the span, the second of which beat the final buzzer, while Buczek had four points and Sangster had two points.

Romich opened the scoring in the second half to get the Dolphins within one, but Saint Rose countered with 12 of the next 13 points to open up a 12-point lead. Jones tallied five of the points, while Jamaal Greenwood nailed a three-pointer and Dorgler and Max Weaver each made lay-ups.

Le Moyne countered with a 12-3 run over 3:39 to get within three points with 11:09 remaining. Sangster and Hyland each posted five points, while Buczek made a lay-up.

Saint Rose answered with 19 of the next 25 points over 5:43 to blow the game open. Dorgler netted seven of the points, Taylor had four, Weaver made a three-pointer, Sam Eckstrom posted three points and Maksis Uskans converted a lay-up.

The Dolphins tallied 10 of the next 12 points to cut their deficit in half, but could not get any closer than eight.

The Golden Knights closed out the game with two baskets and four free throws in the last minute to close out the game.

Le Moyne (14-11, 8-10 NE-10) wraps up its non-conference slate on Wednesday at home against Gannon University at 7:00 p.m.
