LOVELL SCORES 1000TH POINT AS MEN’S BASKETBALL RALLIES FOR 86-77 WIN OVER AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL ON “SENIOR DAY”

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) scored a career-high 32 points, including the 1000th of his career, to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to an 86-77 come-from-behind win over American International College on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Lovell, who became the 41st player in the program's history to score 1000 career points, reached the milestone with a free throw with 3:57 remaining. He eclipsed his previous career high of 30 with a free throw with 31 seconds. Also by making that free throw, Lovell (501 & 123) became the second player in the program's history to record at least 500 points and 100 assists in the same season. Len Rauch '91 turned the trick during the 1990-91 season with 538 points and 113 assists. Lovell made a career-best 14 free throws in a career-high 17 attempts in the contest and tied his career high with four three-pointers, while also dishing out five assists. His 14 makes and 17 attempts from the charity stripe are both the fifth-most by a Dolphin in a game and the most since Laurence Ekperigin '10 made 16 of 22 on February 17, 2010. Freshman guard Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points in a career-best 33 minutes, while dishing out a career-best six assists. Senior forward Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy), who was honored by the Dolphin Athletic Association prior to the game, recorded his team-best fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds (11 in the second half). His rebound total is the highest by a Dolphin since Jim Janson '12 M '14 pulled down 18 on February 20, 2012. Sophomore forward Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) netted 11 points, while freshman guard Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) posted 10 points and career high-tying six rebounds.

Cameron Dobbs led the Yellow Jackets offensively with 26 points, including 13 points in each half, while adding five steals and three rebounds. Bobby Harris flirted with a quadruple-double with 17 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and seven steals. Trahmier Burrell was the third Yellow Jacket in double digits with 12 points, while adding seven rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets, who have suffered two of their six losses to the Dolphins, rattled off nine straight points to take their largest lead of the game, 11-4, just over four minutes into the game. Four different players scored in the streak, which was capped by a Harris fast-break lay-up.

Following an Oscar Assie fast-break lay-up to give AIC a 13-7 lead with 15:07 left, Le Moyne scored 20 of the next 26 points to its largest lead of the half. Hyland led the charge with eight points, while Romich and Lovell each had four points and Buczek and Sangster each had two.

American International, which will be the Southwest Division's second seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championships, answered with eight straight points and 11 of the next 13 points to regain the lead with 6:35 left. Dobbs had five of the 11, while Burrell had four and Harris had the other two.

The teams then went back and forth over the next four minutes. After Lovell gave the Dolphins a 38-37 lead with two free throws, the Yellow Jackets took the lead for good in the half with five straight points. Harris converted a jumper before D.J. Gutridge nailed a three-pointer.

Lovell and Dobbs traded three-pointers in the final 58 seconds as AIC took a 45-41 halftime lead.

After Lovell tied the score at 45 with 18:47 left, the Yellow Jackets scored 11 of the next 15 points to regain their seven-point margin. Four different players scored in the stretch, led by five points from Dobbs.

Le Moyne followed with 11 consecutive points over three minutes and 24 of the next 30 points to open up a double-digit lead with 5:43 to go. In the 11-0 stretch, Hyland hit a jumper and then Lovell drained three consecutive three-pointers for the lead. Following a Marcus Porter jumper to get the Yellow Jackets within 60-58, the Dolphins rattled off 13 of the next 17 points. Hyland bookended the span with conventional three-point plays, while junior forward Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) scored four points and Lovell made three free throws.

After Sangster gave the Dolphins their largest lead of the game, 80-67, with a three-pointer with 3:17 left, American International scored 10 of the next 11 points to trim its deficit to four with 1:00 left. Dobbs nailed a pair of three-pointers in the stretch to lead the comeback attempt.

The Dolphins put the game away by making five free throws over the final 58 seconds, while AIC failed to score over the span.

Le Moyne (15-12, 9-10 NE-10), which snapped a four-game losing streak, closes out the regular season on Tuesday against Pace University at 7:00 p.m. A win over the Setters gives the Dolphins the third seed in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division and a bye into the quarterfinals, where they would take on second-seeded Saint Anselm College on Sunday, March 1. A loss to the Setters and a loss by New Haven against Adelphi results in the same matchup. A Le Moyne loss and a New Haven win drops the Dolphins to the fourth seed, in which case the Dolphins would host the Northeast Division's fifth seed on Friday, February 27. Bentley University currently holds a one-game lead over Merrimack College and Franklin Pierce University for the fifth seed in the Northeast. On Tuesday, if Merrimack beats Saint Michael's and Franklin Pierce beats Bentley, Merrimack gets the fifth seed. If Merrimack loses to Saint Michael's, the winner of Bentley and Franklin Pierce gets the fifth seed.
