MEN’S BASKETBALL CLINCHES THIRD SEED WITH 73-61 VICTORY OVER PACE

Syracuse, N.Y. – Five Dolphins scored in double digits to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 73-61 victory over Pace University in the Northeast-10 Conference regular-season finale on Tuesday night at Ted Grant Court.

With the victory, the Dolphins finish the regular season with an overall record of 16-12 and a mark of 10-10 in Northeast-10 action to claim the third seed in the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division and a bye into the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. The Dolphins will travel to Manchester, New Hampshire to take on the Northeast Division's second seed, Saint Anselm College, on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. During the regular season, the Hawks won the meeting in Manchester, 86-66.

Junior forward Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) led the Dolphins with 16 points (11 in the first half), while adding five rebounds and two assists. Freshmen guards Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) and Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton) each scored 13 points, while Sangster had four rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) recorded his second straight double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds (seven offensive), while adding three steals, two assists and two blocks. Junior guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) tallied 10 points, six assists and four rebounds.

Shelton Mickell led all scorers in the game with 25 points, 14 of which he scored in the second half. Kyle Person recorded 16 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

After the teams went back and forth over the opening eight and one-half minutes, resulting in a 13-9 Le Moyne lead, the Dolphins rattled off 12 of the next 14 points to take their largest lead of the half. Hyland and Romich each had three points in the span and Mahoney and sophomore forward Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) each had two points, while the other two points came off a Pace player tipping the ball into the Le Moyne basket.

The teams split the final 16 points of the half as the Dolphins took a 33-19 lead into the intermission. Mahoney had six of Le Moyne's eight points, while Mickell had six of Pace's eight points over the last 4:23.

Pace scored nine of the first 13 points of the second half to trim its deficit into single digits. Mike Demello tallied five points and Bryan Rivers had the other four.

The Dolphins answered with a 15-6 run to take an 18-point lead with 11:36 left. Lovell, Romich and Sangster each had four points, while Hyland added a three-pointer from the left wing.

The Setters countered with a 12-4 run to pull within 56-46 with 6:21 left. Mickell had six points in the spurt, Pearson added five and Khalil Brown made a free throw.

Le Moyne pushed its lead to a game-high 19 points with 2:53 left with nine straight points. Sangster had the first four, Mahoney drilled a three-pointer and then Lovell converted a jump shot.

Pace tallied 15 of the next 19 points over 2:25 to get within eight with 28 seconds left, but could not get any closer. Mickell and Pearson accounted for all 15 points with eight and seven, respectively.

Hyland and Buczek each made two free throws in the final 19 seconds to close out the game's scoring.
