#2 MEN’S LACROSSE OPENS SEASON WITH 17-10 WIN OVER WHEELING JESUIT

Syracuse, N. Y. – Senior midfielder Joe Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) scored a career-high five goals to lead the second-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to a 17-10 win over Wheeling Jesuit University on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Ted Grant Field.

Corapi opened the game's scoring just 59 seconds into the contest after taking a feed from junior attackman Mike Jenkins (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) off a restart. He doubled the lead 86 seconds later with an unassisted tally. Jenkins gave the Dolphins a 3-0 lead at the 11:04 mark with an unassisted goal. Just two minutes later, Corapi fed freshman attackman Justin Kesselring (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) on the right edge of the crease, where he dunked the ball for his first collegiate goal.

Wheeling Jesuit broke through with 5:42 left in the first quarter on an extra-man goal by Dereck Downs. The Dolphins answered back 2:13 later with an extra-man goal of their own as graduate student midfielder Matt Taylor (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius/Cornell) finished off a feed from Kesselring on the left side for his first goal as a Dolphin. Bryce Brochu got the Cardinals back within three with his third goal of the season with 2:04 left in the quarter, but senior attackman Kevin Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) gave the Dolphins a 6-2 lead at the end of the quarter after taking a feed from Kesselring with 21 seconds left.

The Dolphins scored twice over the opening 1:50 of the second quarter to extend their lead to six. Junior midfielder Mike Fiorini (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) scored from the right side at the 14:04 mark, while Kesselring netted his second goal of the day with 13:10 left following a Le Moyne timeout.

The Cardinals followed with four consecutive goals over a span of 4:05 to get within two. Jared Baranowski started the run at the 9:53 mark and Brochu followed with his second goal of the game 58 seconds later. Duston Doudelet registered an extra-man goal with 8:08 left off a pass from Brochu, while adding his team's sixth goal at the 5:48 mark off a pass from Matt Lee.

Corapi gave the Dolphins a 9-6 lead at halftime by finishing off a pass from Jenkins with 1:51 remaining in the quarter.

Le Moyne scored the only four goals of the third quarter to extend its lead to a game-high seven goals. Following a Wheeling Jesuit turnover, Corapi spun through the defense and fired a shot into the back of the net just 49 seconds into the quarter. Kelly pushed the margin to five with his second goal of the day at the 13:01 mark off a pass from freshman midfielder Bailey Wilkinson (Black River, N.Y./Carthage). Off a right-to-left move at the top of the box, senior midfielder Chris Breiner (Troy, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling) registered his first goal of the season with 5:04 left in the quarter. After picking up a loose ball and moving it into the offensive end, junior defensive midfielder Kyle DeAngelis (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) fed Kelly for his third goal of the day with 3:31 left in the period.

Wheeling Jesuit answered Le Moyne's five-goal run with four straight to open the fourth quarter. Lee found the back of the net 61 seconds into the quarter, while Doudelet tallied an extra-man goal 55 seconds later. Lee netted his second goal of the quarter with 10:06 left, while Luke Gilman moved around the left side of the net for his first goal of the campaign just 25 seconds later.

On the ensuing faceoff, Corapi picked up the ball and raced up field before firing the ball into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the contest. Following a save by senior goalkeeper Alex Krawec (Kirkville, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa/Onondaga C.C.), sophomore midfielder Brian Rogers (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) recorded his first goal of the season with 7:32 left. Out of a timeout, Wilkinson netted his first collegiate goal to give the Dolphins a 16-10 lead with 4:49 remaining. Rogers finished off the game's scoring with an unassisted tally with 3:36 to go.

Krawec registered 12 saves in his first career start to earn his first win as a Dolphin. Jake Lilly took the loss for the Cardinals after allowing seven goals (against one save) in 16:19 between the pipes.

Le Moyne (1-0), which has won 16 straight season openers, returns to action on Saturday against Lake Erie College at 12:00 p.m.
