#2 MEN’S LACROSSE UPSET BY #8 LAKE ERIE, 7-6

Syracuse, N.Y. – Reagan Harding scored the go-ahead goal midway through the fourth quarter to lead eighth-ranked Lake Erie College to a 7-6 upset victory over the second-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Ted Grant Field.

The loss marks the first by the Dolphins at home (the Greater Syracuse area) in the regular season against a non-conference opponent since a 9-8 loss to then-C.W. Post (now LIU Post) at the Carrier Dome during the 2001 season, a span of 83 games.

Following three turnovers by each team and a missed shot by the Storm over the opening eight minutes of the game, the Dolphins tallied the first goal of the contest as graduate student midfielder Matt Taylor (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius/Cornell) found the back of the net for the second time as a Dolphin with 6:53 left in the quarter.

The Storm took advantage of another Le Moyne turnover to knot the game at one apiece with 4:23 left as Austin Bishop scored his fourth goal of the season. Just 50 seconds later, Robert Pelkey gave Lake Erie its first lead with an unassisted marker.

Le Moyne evened the score at two apiece only 66 seconds later as freshman midfielder Bailey Wilkinson (Black River, N.Y./Carthage) scored off a dodge from the right side.

The Dolphins regained the lead on an extra-man opportunity just 54 seconds into the second quarter. Sophomore attackman Alex O'Brien (Hanson, Mass./Boston College High) set a pass to freshman attackman Justin Kesselring (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), who fired in his third goal of the campaign.

Following almost 10 minutes of scoreless action, the Storm scored twice in a span of 1:45 to take the lead back. Lucas Shafer moved around the right side of the cage before tallying his third goal of the year with 4:28 left in the half. Off a two-minute illegal body check by the Dolphins as Shafer released the shot, Harding netted his sixth goal of the season after receiving a pass from Shafer with 2:43 remaining.

After 13 and one-half minutes of scoreless play to start the third quarter, during which time the Dolphins had four shots and four turnovers and the Storm had 11 shots (six Le Moyne saves) and one turnover, Lake Erie extended its lead to two on an unassisted goal by Courtland Black-Araujo with 1:21 to go in the period.

Le Moyne rallied to tie the score at five apiece just over three and one-half minutes into the fourth quarter. Wilkinson ended Le Moyne's scoring drought of 31:46 by recording his second unassisted goal of the game with 12:20 to play. Following a caused turnover by senior defenseman Eric Chadderdon (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg/Ohio State) with 11:38 left, junior attackman Logan Thomas (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool/Onondaga C.C.) tallied his first goal as a Dolphin 10 seconds later to knot the score at five.

Following a pair of Le Moyne turnovers around a Lake Erie turnover, Harding rifled a shot into the back of the net from the left side with 8:11 remaining for his seventh goal of the year. Harding won the ensuing faceoff which led to an extra-man goal (and the eventual game-winner) in front of the crease by Bishop 38 seconds later off a pass from Mitchell Shafer.

After two errant shots by the Storm and a Lake Erie penalty with 5:46 left, senior attackman Kevin Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) posted his fourth goal of the year with 5:27 remaining after taking a feed from O'Brien.

The Storm had three chances to run the clock out over the final five minutes, but turned the ball over each time. Le Moyne had a chance to tie the score with 2:45 left, but sent a shot left of the cage. After the Dolphins got the ball back with 1:59 remaining, Kesselring had a shot saved with 1:04 to play. Le Moyne had one last chance after Lake Erie threw the ball away with 22 seconds left, but Kelly's shot with two seconds left hit the post.

Senior goalkeeper Alex Krawec (Kirkville, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa/Onondaga C.C.) registered 13 saves, including 11 of the second and third quarters, in suffering his first career loss. Nicholas Simonetti registered five saves to earn the victory between the pipes for the Storm. Lake Erie registered a 33-20 advantage in shots, a 9-7 edge in faceoff wins and had five fewer turnovers (12-17).

Le Moyne (1-1) looks to avoid its first non-conference losing streak since the 2001 season when it takes on 12th-ranked Mercyhurst University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at St. John Fisher College's Growney Stadium in Pittsford, N.Y.
