Pittsford, N.Y. – Seniors
Kevin Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) and
Joe Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) each recorded four points to lead the sixth-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to a 9-5 victory over 11th-ranked Mercyhurst University on Saturday afternoon at St. John Fisher College's Growney Stadium.
After Cory Becker got Mercyhurst on the scoreboard first just 40 seconds into the game, the Dolphins tallied three straight goals to take the lead. Corapi evened the score at one apiece with an extra-man goal with 9:46 left after taking a pass from junior attackman
Logan Thomas (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool/Onondaga C.C.). Just over five minutes later, Corapi fed Kelly for his fifth goal of the season. Kelly added his sixth goal only 34 seconds later to put the Dolphins up by two with 3:49 left in the opening quarter.
Mercyhurst countered with a pair of goals over a stretch of 4:19 spanning the end of the first and beginning of the second quarter. Following a save by Le Moyne senior goalkeeper
Alex Krawec (Kirkville, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa/Onondaga C.C.) only 33 seconds after Kelly's second goal, Keyan McQueen collected the loose ball and dumped it into the back of the net. McQueen did the same thing with 13:54 left in the second quarter to knot the game at three.
The Dolphins scored three times over 5:06 to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. Thomas gave Le Moyne the lead for good with his second goal as a Dolphin with 8:44 to play. Just under three and one-half minutes later, Thomas fed Corapi for his team-leading seventh goal of the campaign and a 5-3 edge. Graduate student midfielder
Matt Taylor (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius/Cornell) closed out the scoring in the first half with an unassisted tally with 3:38 left.
Midway through the third quarter, sophomore midfielder
Brian Rogers (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) registered his third goal of the season to give the Dolphins their first four-goal lead of the game.
The Lakers snapped their scoring drought of 25:37 with an extra-man goal by James Crowe with 4:17 remaining the third off a pass from Connor Enright.
Mercyhurst pulled within 7-5 with 8:48 left in the fourth quarter on an unassisted goal by Becker, but the Lakers would not put another shot on goal until there were only 68 seconds left in the game and that shot was saved by Krawec.
Le Moyne finished off the game's scoring by finding the back of the net twice in a span of 38 seconds. Kelly registered Le Moyne's eighth goal of the game with 6:24 remaining after taking a pass from Corapi, while Rogers tallied an unassisted goal at the 5:46 mark.
Krawec finished the game with a career-best 16 saves, which ties for the second-most saves in a single game by a Dolphin over the last 13 seasons, to earn his second career win. Michael Grace took the loss after allowing eight goals and making 12 saves over 59:36 between the pipes. Matt Wells gave up Le Moyne's first goal of the game while Grace sat in the penalty box for a delay of game penalty. Mercyhurst posted a 29-28 edge in shots, while Le Moyne won 11 of the 18 faceoffs and recorded a 29-18 advantage in ground balls.
Le Moyne (2-1), which improves to 8-0 all-time against the Lakers, opens Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday against Assumption College at 12:00 p.m.
