THIRD-RANKED MEN’S LACROSSE EARNS “UPSTATE CHALLENGE” POINT WITH 19-7 WIN OVER SAINT ROSE

Syracuse, N.Y. – Graduate student midfielder Matt Taylor (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius/Cornell) scored five goals to lead the third-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to a 19-7 victory over The College of Saint Rose on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play at Ted Grant Field.

With the victory, the Dolphins claim the men's lacrosse point in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between Le Moyne and Saint Rose. Through 14 sports, the Dolphins and Golden Knights are tied, 7-7, with baseball and outdoor track remaining.

The Dolphins jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and never had its lead dip below six the remainder of the game. After scooping up a rebound on the left wing, Taylor tallied his 15th goal of the season from the left edge of the crease with 12:43 remaining. Just under two minutes later, senior attackman Chris Breiner (Troy, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling) found the back of the net for the eighth time this season after taking a pass from junior defensive midfielder Nick Kline (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool). Off a Saint Rose turnover off the ensuing faceoff, Taylor finished off a pass from senior attackman Kevin Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge). Taylor scored off another feed from Kelly just 57 seconds later. Following six minutes of scoreless play, senior midfielder Alec Westerhoff (Lagrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township/Bridgton Academy) netted his first goal of the season after accepting a pass from junior attackman Logan Thomas (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool/Onondaga C.C.). Taylor picked up his fourth goal of the quarter 16 seconds later to force a Saint Rose timeout. Sophomore midfielder Brian Rogers (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) finished off the scoring in the quarter with 41 seconds left after receiving a feed from Thomas.

Senior midfielder Joe Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) extended the lead to 8-0 by registering an extra-man goal off a pass from Rogers 46 seconds into the second quarter.

Saint Rose got on the scoreboard with 12:13 left as the teams exchanged goals over a span of seven minutes. During the same penalty Corapi scored, Kevin Fleming tallied a man-down goal with 12:13 left just six seconds after a Saint Rose timeout. Kelly pushed the margin back to eight by scoring in transition with 10:02 left off a pass from Kline. Fleming found the back of the net for the second time in the quarter with 7:38 remaining. After Taylor gave the Dolphins a 10-2 lead with 5:12 left, freshman attackman Ryan Suddaby (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) danced around the right edge of the crease seven seconds later after taking a pass from Kelly.

The Golden Knights scored four of the first five goals in the third quarter to cut their deficit to six with 4:30 left in the stanza. Fleming started the run with his third goal of the day with 14:19 remaining off a pass from Kris Miller. Following another transition goal by Kelly off a pass from Kline with 9:24 remaining, Justin Golec ignited a 3-0 spurt with an unassisted goal with 6:35 remaining. Just 41 seconds later, Matt Graham finished off a pass from Fleming. The duo connected again with 4:30 left to make it 12-6.

Le Moyne scored the final two goals of the third quarter as part of a 7-0 run. Corapi started the outburst with his 26th goal of the season with 2:33 to go after collecting a pass from Breiner. Junior midfielder Mike Fiorini (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) fired in his sixth goal of the season with 45 seconds remaining.

After winning the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter, Corapi raced up field to tally his third goal of the game. Corapi tallied Le Moyne's 16th goal with 13:05 left off a pass from Thomas, his third assist of the game. Westerhoff found the back of the net for the second time after snaring a pass from Thomas with 9:51 remaining. Freshman attackman Justin Kesselring (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and junior attackman Pat Nowak (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) connected on Le Moyne's final two goals of the game. Kesselring scored in transition from Nowak with 5:41 left, while they reversed roles for another transition goal at the 3:47 mark.

Graham scored in an extra-man situation with 1:41 left off a pass from Fleming to end the game's scoring.

Senior goalkeeper Alex Krawec (Kirkville, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa/Onondaga C.C.), who was named the Northeast-10 Conference Goalkeeper of the Week and the ECAC Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, registered six saves (against six goals) over the first 45 minutes to earn his 10th win of the season. Classmate Ben Romagnoli (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia/Syracuse) made three saves (against one goal) in the fourth quarter. Nick Longo took the loss between the pipes for the Golden Knights after making 10 saves (against 16 goals) over 46:55.

Le Moyne (10-1, 8-0 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday at sixth-ranked Adelphi University (9-1, 7-1 NE-10) at 1:00 p.m.
