Andy Parrino '08 has been named to 2015 United States Pan American Men's Baseball Team roster for the upcoming Pan American Games in Toronto, Ontario. The U.S. team is comprised of 24 players not currently on Major League Baseball 40-man rosters.
The team spent the early part of this week at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina preparing for the Games, which will run from July 11-19 and be played at President's Choice Ajax Pan Am Ballpark in Ajax, Ontario. The U.S. squad, which is looking to win its first gold medal at the Pan Am Games since 1967, will open play against Puerto Rico on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
During the week of training, the team participated in the Americas Baseball Festival along with the national teams from Canada and Cuba and the U.S. Collegiate National Team. Parrino appeared in all three games and started the first and third. His starts came at shortstop and second base, while he entered the game at third base in the sixth inning against Cuba. At the plate, he had two hits, two RBI, a run scored and a walk, while he had five putouts and six assists in the field.
Parrino, in his third year in the Oakland Athletics organization, has split the 2015 season between the A's and the Triple-A Nashville Sounds. In 44 games over two stints with the Sounds, Parrino is hitting .276 with six doubles, five home runs, 20 runs scored and 16 RBI. He appeared in 17 games for the Athletics between May 22 and June 19, mainly as a late-inning defensive replacement, and scored one run.
The U.S. team has two other players with ties to Central New York. Starting catcher Tommy Murphy, a top-seven prospect in the Colorado Rockies organization, is a native of West Monroe and attended Paul V. Moore High School in Central Square. Pitcher Scott McGregor, a member of the Washington Nationals organization, currently is in the rotation for the Syracuse Chiefs and leads the staff in wins and innings pitched. Scott Cassidy '98 was a part of the U.S. team that won the silver medal at the 2001 World Cup in Taiwan.
