Cal Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) scored with just under 12 minutes remaining to give the Le Moyne College men's soccer team a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Roberts Wesleyan College on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Ted Grant Field. With the victory, head coach
Tom Bonus earned the 200th win of his 19-year career.
The Dolphins opened the game with the first 10 shots of the contest, but were unable to find the back of the net. Their three best chances came in a span of nine seconds two-thirds of the way through the first half. Off a corner kick from the right side by Filtch, senior back
Jack Ball (Sunbury, Middlesex/Bishop Wand/Bryant & Stratton) headed the ball towards the net, but Redhawks goalkeeper John Ciavaglia was able to knock the point-blank shot away. Senior back
Mark Gentile (Walworth, N.Y./Wayne) fired the rebound back towards the goal, but the attempt hit a defender. Sophomore forward
Jacob Borssen (Stockholm, Sweden/Solna Gymnasium) collected the rebound and redirected the shot towards the net, but Ciavaglia was able to knock the ball out of bounds.
Off a scrum in the middle of the field, the ball was sent by Roberts Wesleyan along the right sideline to Tom Musso, who collected the ball and dribbled the ball towards the right post before slipping a shot inside the lower left corner of the net from six yards out for his first goal of the season.
After taking the first four shots of the second half, the Dolphins evened the score at one apiece 16:09 into the stanza. After collecting the ball on the right side, sophomore midfielder
Adam Resetarits (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) sent a cross from the right endline. Ciavaglia got a hand on the ball, but Borssen was able to fly in and head the loose ball into the back of the net from just off the goal line for his first tally of the campaign.
Just under 17 minutes later, Le Moyne tallied the game-winning goal. From the right side, senior midfielder
Nick Rauscher Henrietta, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) sent the ball into the left side of the penalty box, where Filtch was able to one-time a shot from eight yards out into the right side of the goal.
Roberts Wesleyan was only able to muster one shot over the last 12 minutes, but it was sent wide right.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) recorded one save to earn his 15th career victory between the pipes. Ciavaglia posted five saves in the loss for the Redhawks. Le Moyne registered a 21-4 advantage in shots, including 12-1 in the first half, while taking all 13 of the game's corner kicks.
Le Moyne (3-1), which has won three straight games against the Redhawks after dropping the first 10 contests in the series, returns to Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against Adelphi University, which ended Le Moyne's season last year in the Northeast-10 Championship quarterfinals.
