Worcester, Mass. – Five Greyhounds each made at least three three-pointers to lead Assumption College to an 83-78 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Laska Gymnasium.
Senior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) led the Dolphins in the setback with 16 points, including 10 in the first half, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Sophomore guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) nailed four three-pointers en route to 14 points, while grabbing a team-best six rebounds and dishing out four assists. Classmate
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) scored in double figures for the third straight game with 12 points, while sophomore forward
Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) came off the bench to record 10 points (two more than his total over the last three games).
Tre Owens led the Greyhounds offensively with 21 points, including 15 in the second half, in 29 minutes off the bench, while adding three rebounds and two steals. Declan Soukup hit all three shots from three-point range en route to 17 points, while Mat Sulda made four trifectas and tallied 14 points. Justin Tuckson came off the bench to make three three-pointers and score 13 points, while dishing out a game-high five assists. Reilly Reid was perfect in three attempts from beyond the three-point line for nine points. The 17 made three-pointers by the Greyhounds are the most by a Le Moyne opponent since Saint Anselm connected for 18 on January 26, 2013.
The Dolphins opened the game with the first five points and later used another 5-0 spurt to take a 14-7 lead on a lay-up by Lovell with 13:49 left, which forced an Assumption timeout.
Assumption answered with a 12-2 run to take its first lead. Soukup started the streak with a three-pointer, Owens followed with a conventional three-point play and a three-pointer to tie the score at 16 and then Tuckson drained a three-pointer for the lead.
After Hyland buried a pair of three-pointers around another three-pointer by Tuckson to knot the score at 22 apiece with 8:58 left, Tuckson and Kamali Bey followed with lay-ups for a four-point edge.
Le Moyne answered with seven straight points to regain the lead. Sangster made two free throws, Lovell registered a conventional three-point play off a steal and then Kaigler made two free throws.
After Reid tied the score at 31 with a three-pointer with 3:09 left, the Dolphins tallied eight of the last 10 points of the half to take a 39-33 lead into the intermission. Senior forward
Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) knocked down a three-pointer and then Sangster made a lay-up. After a Tuckson jumper with 1:55 left, Lovell drained a three-pointer from the left wing at the buzzer.
Le Moyne extended its lead to eight on a pair of occasions over the opening 1:25 of the second half, but Assumption got three-pointers from Sulda, Reid and Tuckson on consecutive possessions to take the lead back with 16:38 left.
The teams then exchanged the lead four times over the next four minutes, while the score was tied on a pair of occasions over the ensuing four minutes, the last of which came at 60 apiece on a lay-up by Kaigler with 8:30 remaining.
Assumption tallied the next eight points to take the lead for good. Owens made a lay-up out of a timeout, Reid followed with a three-pointer and then Sulda drained a three-pointer with 7:00 left after a Le Moyne turnover.
Le Moyne countered with a 7-2 spurt over 1:25 to get within three-points with 4:22 remaining. Lovell made two free throws, junior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) converted a lay-up and then Mahoney nailed another three-pointer.
Owens made a jumper and a three-pointer 50 seconds apart and another three-pointer 1:33 later to push Assumption's lead to a game-high nine points with 1:42 remaining.
Hyland and freshman guard
Eriq Jenkins (Windsor, Ontario/Catholic Central) buried three-pointers 19 seconds apart around an Assumption turnover to get the Dolphins with 78-75 with 1:11 left. After two free throws by Bey, Jenkins nailed another three-pointer from the corner with 39 seconds left to make it a two-point game.
Bey added two more free throws and Julian Aiken connected on one foul shot to close out the game's scoring.
Le Moyne (5-8, 3-5 NE-10), which has dropped its first five road games for the first time since the 2000-01 season (the last time the Dolphins had a first-year head coach), is back home on Tuesday against nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College at 7:00 p.m.
