MEN’S SOCCER UPSETS SECOND-RANKED SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE, 1-0

Syracuse, N.Y. – Freshman midfielder Pablo Fernandez (Aviles, Spain/Real Oviedo) scored early in the second half as the Le Moyne College men's soccer team upset #2 nationally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field.

Southern New Hampshire is now 64-5-4 in its 73 games since the beginning of the 2013 season, with two of those five losses coming to the Dolphins at Ted Grant Field. The Dolphins defeated Southern New Hampshire when the Penmen were the top-ranked team in the nation on October 25, 2014.

In the scoreless first half, the Penmen recorded a 5-4 edge in shots, but each team was only able to put one shot on target. Both of the shots put on goal in the stanza were saved by the goalkeeper.

After junior goalkeeper Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) registered a save in the 50th minute, the Dolphins struck for the only goal they would need. Following a throw-in along the right sideline by junior midfielder Adam Resetarits (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt), senior back James Goodridge (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) carried the ball to the endline. Goodridge then served the ball into the goal box to Fernandez, who settled the ball with his left foot and then fired a right-footed shot into the lower left corner of the net at the 50:50 mark for his second goal of the season.

The Dolphins were able to prevent the Penmen from taking another shot until the final minute of the game. Yannis Becker had a shot saved by Beaury with 25 seconds left and then Michael Goncalves' rebound attempt was blocked out of bounds by a Le Moyne defender. Becker served the ensuing corner kick in front of the net, but Beaury snared the ball out of the air and allowed the time to run out.

Beaury finished the game with three saves in between the pipes in recording his 30th career victory and 18th career shutout. Nick Zucco, who set the NCAA Division II personal shutout streak record earlier this season by holding opponents scoreless for 1023:12, made two saves in suffering his second straight loss.

Le Moyne (6-2-1, NE-10 4-2), which improves to 8-1-2 at home against the Penmen under 17th-year head coach Tom Bonus, remains home to face Saint Michael's College on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
