Manchester, N.Y. – Freshman midfielder
Claire Stackel (Watertown, N.Y./Copenhagen) had a hand in all three goals to lead the Le Moyne College women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field.
The Dolphins jumped out to a 3-0 lead just only 10:10 into the game. They started the scoring at the 7:14 mark as Stackel sent a through ball into the center of the penalty box to senior midfielder
Rachel Terry (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), who then slotted a shot into the left side of the net for her eighth goal of the season. The eight goals are tied for the second-most in the Northeast-10, while her 17 points are tied for the fourth-most. On Le Moyne's career charts, Terry now has 26 goals and 59 points, which both rank as the eighth most in the program's history.
Le Moyne doubled its lead less than two minutes later when Stackel converted a penalty kick into the left side of the goal for her second tally of the campaign. Only 64 seconds later, junior midfielder
Brielle Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus/Mansfield) registered her fourth marker of the season off a one-touch shot from the right side of the goal box after taking a crossing pass from the left side of the penalty box from Stackel.
Southern New Hampshire cut into its deficit in the 19th minute of play. Sydney Crema carried the ball down the left endline before centering the ball. Danielle Humphreys ran onto the ball and sent a one-touch shot inside the near left post at the 18:26 mark for her second goal of the year.
The Penmen registered an 8-4 advantage in shots over the final 20 minutes of the half, but neither team was able to add to its goal total. Each team put two shots on target in the span, but the opposing goalkeeper was able to turn away the shots.
Following 10 minutes of scoreless action to start the second half, the Penmen took advantage of a scramble in front of the net to pull within one goal. After Trisha Luis had her shot from the left side blocked by a defender at the 55:29 mark, Courtney Benson sent the rebound into the back of the net from the right side for her first goal of the year.
Southern New Hampshire registered a 14-2 advantage in shots over the remainder of the game, but could not tally the equalizer. The Penmen's best chance came at the 72:38 mark as Olivia Parsons sent a shot towards the open left side of the goal, but freshman back/midfielder
MacKenzie Negus (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) was able to clear the ball away before it could cross the goal line.
Parsons had one final shot with 10 seconds left, but sophomore goalkeeper
Anastasija Cumika (Riga, Latvia/Riga Kengarags/West Florida) was able to come up with the save and run the clock out.
Cumika finished the game with six saves, including four in the second half, to earn her fourth victory of the season. Autumn Scanlon registered five saves in the loss for the Penmen. Southern New Hampshire posted a 29-14 advantage in shots, including a 19-3 mark in the second half, while taking 14 of the game's 17 corner kicks, including nine of the 10 in the second stanza.
Le Moyne (4-4-1, 2-3-1 NE-10), which defeated the Penmen for just the fifth time in 24 all-time meetings, but the second straight win in Manchester, returns home to host Pace University on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
