MEN’S BASKETBALL USES THREE-POINT BARRAGE TO DEFEAT MOLLOY, 81-76

Albany, N.Y. – Sophomore guard C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) nailed seven three-pointers to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to an 81-76 victory over Molloy College on Sunday afternoon on the second day of the Northeast-10 Challenge presented by Hilton Garden Inn Albany Medical at The College of Saint Rose's Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.

Asuncion-Byrd, who opened his Dolphin career with 21 points yesterday, did one point better by going 7-for-10 from three-point range and adding one free throw, while grabbing four rebounds. His seven three-pointers are tied for the third-most in a game in the program's history and are the most since Chris Johnson '12 made eight at Pace on February 16, 2011. Junior guard Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) tallied the second-highest scoring output of his career with 17 points, including 12 in the second half, while dishing out seven assists for the second straight game. Junior guard Tyree Chambers (Bayreuth, Germany/Graf-Münster Gymnasium/Providence) was the third Dolphin starter in double figures with 11 points, while classmate Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) came off the bench to score 12 points, nine of which came from the foul line in the second half.

After Corbett hit a jumper 3:19 into the game to give Molloy a 7-5 lead, the Dolphins tallied eight straight points to take a six-point advantage. Junior forward Isaiah Eisendorf (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook/Gannon) made a lay-up and then Chambers and Asuncion-Byrd nailed three-pointers.

The Lions pulled within two on three occasions before Sangster converted three foul shots with 7:36 left in the half for a 21-16 lead.

After Morris had a dunk and Marquardt buried a three-pointer to tie the score at 21 with 4:43 to go, junior forward Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) recorded a conventional three-point play and Sangster followed with a fast-break lay-up off a steal 10 seconds later.

Following six points from each team over the next three minutes, Morris made a free throw with three seconds left in the half to get the Lions within 32-28 at halftime.

After Asuncion-Byrd drained a pair of three-pointers around a Guzzardi jumper over the opening 88 seconds to push Le Moyne's lead to 38-30, the Lions rattled off a 14-2 run to take their largest lead of the game. Guzzardi had four of the points, Marquardt and Corbett buried three-pointers and Mike Torre and Morris made jump shots.

Le Moyne answered with 11 straight points and 17 of the next 19 points to open up its largest lead of the game, 57-46.
