Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) tallied 17 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 68-54 win over Gannon University in non-conference action at Ted Grant Court on Saturday afternoon.
Hyland buried a career high-tying five three-pointers en route to his team-high point total, while adding five rebounds. Sophomore guard
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) registered 12 of his 13 points in the opening half, including a career-best two three-pointers. Junior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) was the third Dolphin in double-figures with 10 points, while grabbing five rebounds.
Jean Yves Toupane led all scorers with 24 points, including 14 in the second half, while adding six rebounds and three steals. Tony Boykins recorded 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds, eight of which he grabbed in the first half.
After senior forward
Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) got the game's scoring started with a conventional three-point play 52 seconds in, the Golden Knights ran off eight straight points, four of which were scored by Boykins.
Le Moyne, which honored Mahoney and classmate
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) prior to the game for their contributions to the program, answered with an 8-0 run of its own to take the lead back with 12:34 left in the opening half. Sangster converted a fast-break lay-up and then Mahoney drained a pair of three-pointers.
Gannon took its final lead by scoring the next six points. Ian Gardener made a free throw and Matthew Dogan followed with a lay-up to tie the score at 11. Toupane then recorded a conventional three-point play for a 14-11 edge with 9:45 left.
The Dolphins countered with the next 10 points and 15 of the next 17 to take their first double-digit lead of the contest. Freshman forward
Brandon Fischer (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) started the streak with a put-back lay-up, Sangster scored five points, Hyland nailed a pair of three-pointers and then Buczek converted a jump shot with 3:52 left.
Gannon pulled within eight on three occasions over the final 3:14 of the half, but Sangster gave the Dolphins a 34-23 lead at the intermission with a three-pointer from the left wing at the buzzer.
After the teams went back and forth over the opening seven minutes of the second half, Gannon registered a 9-3 spurt to cut its deficit to three, 46-43, with 9:54 remaining. Four different Golden Knights accounted for the nine points.
Le Moyne responded with five straight points and 13 of the next 17 to regain control of the game. Hyland tallied five of the points, while freshman guard
Eriq Jenkins (Windsor, Ontario/Catholic Central) buried a three-pointer early in the run.
Gannon pulled within 10, 63-53, with 3:21 left on a three-point play by Isaiah Eisendorf, but Jenkins followed with a lay-up and Buczek connected on a three-pointer to put the game away.
Le Moyne (8-15), which has won three of the five meetings with the Golden Knights since the teams resumed their storied series in 2013 after 18 years without playing, returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday against Adelphi University at 7:00 p.m. for its final home game of the season.
