Springfield, Mass. – Juwan Moody scored 26 points to lead American International College to a 72-59 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Butova Gymnasium.
The Dolphins had three players score in double-figures in the setback. Senior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) registered 10 points, including eight in the second half, and dished out a game-high five assists. Junior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) recorded 10 points and four rebounds, while sophomore guard
Anthony Richards (New Castle, Pa./New Castle/West Virginia Wesleyan) posted 10 points and three rebounds.
Moody connected on six three-pointers en route to his game-high scoring output, 16 of which he scored in the second half, while adding three rebounds and two assists. Nolan Woodward registered a double-double of 16 points (10 in the first half) and a game-best 10 rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets opened the game with 12 of the first 18 points, including seven straight points for the 12-6 lead with 14:19 left. Woodward and Moody each hit three-pointers in the span, while three other Yellow Jackets tallied two points each.
Following a lay-up by Justin Daniel to give the Yellow Jackets a 16-11 edge with 11:59 remaining, sophomore guard
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) made a free throw and two free throws to get the Dolphins within a point with 11:01 left.
American International answered with a 7-2 spurt to push its lead back to six with 8:40 remaining. Bruce Spruell started the streak with a lay-up, Cameron Dobbs drained a three-pointer and Woodward capped the run with a free throw.
After the teams went back and forth over the next four minutes, Richards made a pair of free throws to get the Dolphins within 30-27 with 3:22 left.
The Yellow Jackets scored seven of the last 10 points of the half to take a 37-30 into halftime. Moody hit a three-pointer, Spruell made two free throws and then Woodward converted a lay-up with 54 seconds left.
Lovell scored the first points of the second half to get the Dolphins within five, but Woodward and Moody combined for the next five points to give the Yellow Jackets a double-digit lead.
After the teams traded points over the next eight minutes, with American International's lead bouncing between seven and 11 points and settling at nine, 52-43, with 8:23 remaining, the Dolphins scored five straight points to get within four. Sophomore guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) drained a three-pointer from the left corner and then freshman forward
Brandon Fischer (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) made a lay-up with 7:34 remaining.
The Yellow Jackets registered nine of the next 10 points to put the game away. Jayvon Pitts-Young and Moody connected on three-pointers, Spruell made a free throw and then Dobb converted a lay-up with 4:53 remaining.
American International's lead bounced between nine and 13 points the remainder of the game.
Le Moyne (6-15, 4-12 NE-10), which now trails AIC by two games for the final spot in the Northeast-10 Championship from the Southwest Division, kicks off a three-game homestand on Tuesday against Pace University at 7:00 p.m.
