Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) scored 11 points in the second half to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 64-56 win over Pace University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday night at Ted Grant Court.
Lovell finished the contest with 13 points, while adding seven rebounds (five in the second half) and five second-half assists. Freshman guard
Eriq Jenkins (Windsor, Ontario/Catholic Central) led the Dolphins in scoring with 15 points (his most in a home game), 13 of which came in the first half, while grabbing a season-best eight rebounds (six in the first half).
Ryan Peterson recorded a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Setters in the defeat. Bryan Rivers, who like Peterson played all 40 minutes, tallied 14 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists. Shelton Mickell was the third Setter in double-digits with 13 points.
After the teams traded baskets over the opening 9:14 of the game, which resulted in an 11-9 Pace lead, the Dolphins rattled off 12 of the next 13 points for their largest lead of the game. Junior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) recorded four of the points, Jenkins and sophomore guard
Anthony Richards (New Castle, Pa./New Castle/West Virginia Wesleyan) each hit three-pointers and sophomore forward
Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) dunked the ball off a feed from Richards.
Pace netted 12 of the last 18 points of the half to get within 27-24 at halftime. Four players combined for the first eight points to get the Setters within 24-20 with 2:39 left. After Jenkins pushed Le Moyne's lead back to seven with 2:22 to go, neither team scored until Mickell made a lay-up with five seconds left. Rivers then stole the in-bounds pass and nailed a jumper at the buzzer to make it a three-point game.
The Setters scored nine of the first 12 points of the second half to take a three-point lead and force a Le Moyne timeout. Mickell tied the score with a three-pointer and then Rivers followed a Buczek free throw with four points in 18 seconds for a 33-30 advantage with 18:04 left.
Le Moyne answered with an 8-3 run to regain the lead. Sophomore guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) drained a three-pointer, classmate
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) converted a lay-up and then Lovell made three free throws for a 38-36 lead with 13:12 to play.
Pace countered with eight consecutive points to take its largest lead of the game, 44-38, with 10:42 remaining. Peterson and Evan Gordinier nailed three-pointers in the run around a lay-up by Mickell.
The Dolphins responded with a 17-7 run, which included a 9-2 spurt at the beginning, to take the lead back. Kaigler scored six points around a three-pointer by Hyland and a lay-up by Lovell before Richards connected on back-to-back three-pointers off feeds from Lovell for a 55-51 edge with 6:15 left.
The Setters made three free throws around one by Sangster over the next 3:18 to get within 56-54, but that's as close as they would get. Lovell drained a three-pointer with 2:16 to go, but Peterson followed with two free throws 63 seconds later to get Pace within 59-56. However, Pace would not score again as Sangster hit a jumper with 32 seconds left and Lovell followed with three free throws to close out the game.
Le Moyne (7-15, 5-12 NE-10), which has won five straight home games against the Setters, concludes its non-conference schedule on Saturday against Gannon University at 12:00 p.m. Prior to tip-off, Lovell and classmate
Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) will be honored by the Dolphin Athletic Association for their contributions to the program.
