Syracuse, N.Y. – Redshirt senior goalkeeper
Alex Krawec (Kirkville, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa/Onondaga C.C.) registered 19 saves to lead the second-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to an 11-6 victory over third-ranked Merrimack College on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field.
The Dolphins jumped on the Warriors early with the first three goals of the game over 6:48. Graduate student midfielder
Matt Taylor (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius/Cornell) got the scoring started at the 12:36 mark with a behind-the-back shot inside the left post off a pass from senior attackman
Andrew Jackson (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger). Just 41 seconds later, Jackson doubled his team's lead with an extra-man goal off a feed from sophomore midfielder
Justin Kesselring (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport). Jackson was a part of Le Moyne's third straight goal by finding senior attackman
Logan Thomas (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool/Onondaga C.C.) for his 12th goal of the season with 8:12 left.
Following a save in transition by goalkeeper Sam Ventresca, Merrimack got on the scoreboard with 1:29 left in the opening quarter as Max Allen tallied his 17th goal of the season.
Le Moyne (5-0, 1-0 NE-10) blew the game open by outscoring the Warriors, 5-1, in the second quarter. Junior midfielder
Brian Rogers (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) pushed Le Moyne's lead back to three 1:25 into the quarter with an unassisted goal off a drive from the right alley. Thomas extended the lead to 5-1 with an unassisted tally just 46 seconds later.
Merrimack (5-1, 4-1 NE-10) trimmed its deficit back to three with 6:30 left in the half with a transition goal as long-stick midfielder Scott Corcoran tallied his second goal of the season off a pass from James Caruso.
Le Moyne scored three times over the last 5:37 of the quarter to take an 8-2 lead into halftime. Jackson started the streak by scoring his 11th goal of the season from the left edge of the crease at the 5:37 mark after taking a pass across the crease from Thomas. Following a save on the doorstep by Krawec, Rogers netted his second goal of the contest with 3:23 left. The Dolphins took their largest lead of the game with 1:40 until intermission as senior attackman
Mike Jenkins (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) scored from the left edge of the crease after taking a pass in transition from Thomas.
Merrimack scored three times in the first 5:36 of the third quarter to cut its deficit in half. Off a Le Moyne turnover on the opening faceoff of the quarter, John Bassett scored from the left side of the crease 18 seconds into the quarter. Allen made it 8-4 with 13:05 left by scoring his 18th goal of the campaign. The Warriors took advantage of a Le Moyne penalty to get within 8-5 with 9:24 left as Allen finished off a pass from Ryan Poirier in an extra-man situation.
Le Moyne regained its four-goal advantage with 6:25 left in the third quarter on an unassisted goal by Rogers off a drive down the left alley.
The Dolphins pushed their lead to lead to 10-5 1:35 into the fourth quarter as Thomas cut in front of the net to score his team-best 14th goal of the season.
Caruso tallied a rebound goal with 8:20 left in the fourth to get the Warriors within 10-6, but senior midfielder
Mike Fiorini (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) found the back of the net for the fourth time this season with a low-bouncer with 6:17 left to deliver the final margin of victory for the Dolphins.
Krawec, who has been named the NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Week three of the first four weeks of the season, tallied six of his saves in the second quarter and recorded seven more in the fourth quarter. The 19 total saves are the most by a Dolphin over the last 14 seasons and eclipse his previous career high of 18 set in a 14-10 win at Adelphi on April 11, 2015. Ventresca finished the contest with eight saves, four of which he made in the first quarter.
Le Moyne, which has won each of the last eight regular-season meetings at home with the Warriors, returns to the field on Tuesday at American International College at 1:00 p.m.
