Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior attackman
Logan Thomas (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool/Onondaga C.C.) recorded a career-high six points to lead the second-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to a 13-6 win over fifth-ranked Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
With the victory, the Dolphins clinch the top seed in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship and at least a share of their 15th Northeast-10 Conference regular season title in their 20 years in the conference. The Dolphins can claim the title outright with a victory at Bentley University on Friday at 7:00 p.m. A win would also give Le Moyne its 14th undefeated conference slate in the last 17 years.
Also with the victory, head coach
Dan Sheehan tied Tony Seaman (LIU Post 1982, Penn 1983-90, Johns Hopkins 1991-98, Towson 1999-11) for 24th place on the NCAA's all-time coaching victories list with his 263rd.
Adelphi's Salvatore Tuttle opened the game's scoring just 1:16 into the contest with his conference-best 54th goal of the year.
The Dolphins responded with five consecutive goals over the final 10:26 of the first quarter and the opening 8:54 of the second quarter. In an extra-man situation, senior attackman
Andrew Jackson (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) evened the score at one apiece at the 10:26 mark after taking a pass from junior midfielder
Brian Rogers (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa). Just 69 seconds later, Rogers gave the Dolphins the lead with his 27th goal of the year following a failed clear by the Panthers. The Dolphins took advantage of another Adelphi penalty to take a 3-1 lead with 1:55 left in the first quarter as Thomas finished off a pass from Jackson in an extra-man situation. Thomas netted his 30th goal of the season 4:41 into the second quarter after collecting a pass from sophomore midfielder
Bailey Wilkinson (Black River, N.Y./Carthage) on the right wing. Following a save by redshirt senior goalkeeper
Alex Krawec (Kirkville, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa/Onondaga C.C.), Rogers gave the Dolphins their first four-goal lead of the game with 6:06 remaining in the half.
After taking a pass from faceoff specialist John English off the ensuing faceoff, long-stick midfielder Luke Spitzer raced into the box before slipping a pass to Anthony Gomes for his 24th goal of the year.
Le Moyne regained its four-goal lead with 4:23 left in the half as sophomore attackman
Justin Kesselring (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) tallied his 15th goal of the season.
Adelphi answered with three goals in a span of 2:14 to pull within one going into halftime. In an extra-man situation, Gordon Purdie, Jr. registered his 32nd goal of the campaign after snaring a pass from Tuttle with 3:15 to go. Tuttle followed with his 55th marker of the season with 2:04 left before Purdie, Jr. recorded another extra-man goal from the left edge of the crease with 1:01 remaining off a pass from Chris Racalbuto.
The Dolphins scored the first two goals of the third quarter to regain control of the game. After sophomore defender
Brendan Entenmann (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) intercepted a pass from behind the goal by Tuttle, Rogers gave the Dolphins a 7-5 edge with 10:24 left in the third quarter. After a scoreless span of 8:14, the longest of the game, Thomas tallied his third goal of the game off a feed from Jackson.
Paul Bentz got the Panthers back within two with his eighth goal of the year with 1:26 remaining in the quarter, but that would mark Adelphi's final goal of the game. The six goals are the fewest Adelphi has scored since an 11-6 loss at New York Tech on April 23, 2014 (a span of 38 games) and are the fewest in a Northeast-10 Conference game since a 9-6 loss at Le Moyne on March 17, 2012 (a span of 53 conference games).
Le Moyne tallied the final five goals of the game to record its most lop-sided victory over the Panthers since Adelphi joined the Northeast-10 for the 2010 season. Thomas started the run by finishing off a pass from graduate student midfielder
Matt Taylor (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius/Cornell) with 48 ticks left in the third. Thomas then fed junior attackman
Alex O'Brien (Hanson, Mass./Boston College High) for his fourth goal of the season at the 9:19 mark of the fourth quarter. Freshman midfielder
Dan Entenmann (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) scored Le Moyne's next two goals at the 7:37 and 3:33 marks, the second of which came after brother Brendan forced Tuttle into a turnover. Thomas completed the game's scoring in a 30-second timer-on situation after collecting the rebound of a Rogers shot with 1:13 to play.
Krawec finished the game with 12 saves, three in each of the quarters, to improve to 14-0 on the season between the pipes. The win is the 30th of Krawec's career, which moves him into fourth place on the program's career wins list. John McGrath registered eight saves in the loss for the Panthers.
Prior to the game, the nine members of the senior class were honored by the Dolphin Athletic Association for their contributions to the program.
