PALUCCI GIVES MEN’S SOCCER 1-0 DOUBLE OVERTIME WIN OVER SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE

Syracuse, N.Y. – Redshirt junior midfielder Marcello Palucci (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep/Florida International) scored the game-winning goal midway through the second overtime period to give the Le Moyne College men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams at Ted Grant Field.

In the opening half of the game, the Dolphins registered five of the six shots. Their best scoring chance came in the 27th minute as senior back Jack Ball (Sunbury, England/Bishop Wand/Bryant & Stratton) had his header off a corner kick hit the crossbar and then freshman forward Salar Faryar (Frankfurt, Germany/Max-Eyth Schule) had his rebound attempt saved by Owls goalkeeper Noah Varonier.

Le Moyne registered another four-shot advantage in the second half, 6-2, but could not find the back of the net as Varonier recorded five saves in the stanza. Ball had another chance to get the Dolphins on the scoreboard off a corner kick, but his header from five yards out with 10:33 left in the second half was snared by a leaping Varonier.

After each team recorded one errant shot in the first overtime period, the Dolphins struck for the game-winning goal in the 105th minute. Palucci collected a loose ball near midfield and then carried the ball upfield. After reaching the top of the penalty box, he sent a left-footed shot into the lower left corner of the net for his first collegiate game-winning goal.

Junior goalkeeper Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) was not required to make a save in the shutout victory, the 16th of his career, but he did come off his line to disrupt numerous chances by the Owls. Varonier finished the game with six saves. Le Moyne registered a 13-5 advantage in shots, while taking nine of the game's 11 corner kicks, including all seven in the first half.

Le Moyne (2-0-1, 1-0 NE-10), which snapped a three-game losing streak to the Owls, is back in action on Tuesday at Roberts Wesleyan College at 6:00 p.m.
