Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore goalkeeper
Anastasija Cumika (Riga, Latvia/Riga Kengarags/West Florida) registered six saves as the Le Moyne College women's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie with the University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams at Ted Grant Field.
In the opening half of the game, New Haven registered six of the seven shots, but only one of the shots was on goal and Cumika recorded the save.
The teams each got off seven shots in the second half, with seven of the 14 shots needing to be saved by the opposing goalkeeper. In a stretch of 11 seconds in the 57th minute, Cumika made two saves to keep the Chargers off the scoreboard, the second of which was made at the left post off a point-blank shot. Le Moyne's best scoring chance in regulation came in the final 25 seconds as junior midfielder
Stephanie Liberati (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) had a shot from inside 12 yards saved and then senior midfielder
Rachel Terry (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) had her rebound shot blocked by a defender out of bounds.
In the eighth minute of the first overtime period, New Haven's Sierra Stein fired a shot at the goal, but it just skimmed off the top of the crossbar.
Stein had a shot from close range with 1:02 left in the second overtime, but Cumika turned the attempt away to preserve her second shutout of the season. Terry had an attempt to win the game with 30 seconds left, but Deandra Nash registered the save.
Cumika, the only goalkeeper in the Northeast-10 yet to allow a goal, increased her shutout streak to start the season to 275:13 with her six saves. Nash recorded five saves between the pipes for the Chargers. New Haven finished the game with a 20-11 advantage in shots, including 7-3 in the overtime periods.
Le Moyne (2-0-1, 0-0-1 NE-10), which has recorded three straight shutouts for just the third time in the program's history (1993 and 2014) and blanked its opening three opponents for the first time in the program's history, hits the road for the first time to take on Mercy College on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
