Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior back
Ryan Matthews (Dublin, Ireland/Clonkeen College/Dublin Institute of Technology) scored late in the second half to give the Le Moyne College men's soccer team a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field.
With the victory, Le Moyne takes a 3-1 lead over the Golden Knights in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions.
Saint Rose, which defeated the Dolphins last season for the first time in 24 years (15 games), struck for the game's first goal less than 13 minutes into the contest. Off a through ball from Carlos Menjivar, Ryan Rooney sent a shot into the top right corner of the net from the top of the box.
Le Moyne answered back just under 10 minutes later to even the score at one apiece. After a throw-in from the right side by junior midfielder
Adam Resetarits (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) was headed away by a Saint Rose defender, freshman forward
Salar Faryar (Frankfurt, Germany/Max-Eyth Schule) chipped the loose ball into the left side of the goal from the top of the penalty box for his team-best fourth goal of the season.
The remaining 22 minutes of the half featured just one shot, but Faryar sent it over the net.
After each team had two errant shots over the first 34 minutes of the second half, the Dolphins tallied the game-winning goal. Off another throw-in by Resetarits from the right side, senior back
Jack Ball (Sunbury, England/Bishop Wand/Bryant & Stratton) put a shot on goal, but Saint Rose goalkeeper was able to push the ball away. However, the ball hit the crossbar and bounced back in front of the net, where Matthews was able to knock it into the back of the net from less than one yard off the line for his fifth career goal.
Saint Rose had two shots over the final 10 minutes, but could not place either on target.
Junior goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) earned his 28th career victory between the pipes for the Dolphins. Esposito made one save in each half in the loss. Le Moyne recorded an 8-5 edge shots, while posting a 12-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Le Moyne (4-1-1, 2-1 NE-10), which improved to 8-0 in NE-10 action against the Golden Knights at home, returns to action on Saturday against Merrimack College at 1:00 p.m. The Dolphins upset the then-8th ranked Warriors in the regular season last year, but fell to the Warriors in the first round of the NCAA Championship.
