Waltham, Mass. – Zach Gilpin scored 21 points to lead Bentley University to a 79-71 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Dana Center.
Le Moyne (14-4, 9-3 NE10), which had its 10-game win streak snapped, returns home to face Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The Penmen lead the NE10's Northeast Division with a 9-3 record.
Sophomore guard
C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) led three Dolphins in double figures with 16 points, 10 of which came in the second half. Senior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) registered 15 points, including nine in the first half, and grabbed six rebounds. Junior guard
Anthony Richards (New Castle, Pa./New Castle/West Virginia Wesleyan) tallied 14 points, six assists and four rebounds.
Gilpin recorded 13 of his game-high point total in the first half, while finishing with four assists and two rebounds in the contest. Ryan Richmond totaled 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Matt Barr posted 15 points. Ferguson Duke turned in 12 points and three steals.
The Falcons opened the game with the first four points and 13 of the first 17 over the beginning 5:05 of the contest. Richmond bookended the spurt with a jumper and a three-pointer, while Gilpin made a pair of lay-ups in the span.
After the Dolphins scored five of the next seven points to get within six, Bentley tallied 12 of the next 18 points to double its lead. Gilpin scored five of the points, while Barr started the run with a three-pointer.
The Dolphins responded with a 12-3 run to get within three points with 5:10 left in the first half. Asuncion-Byrd drained consecutive three-point attempts, Buczek had a put-back lay-up and Richards forced a Bentley timeout with a three-pointer.
Bentley answered back with nine straight points to regain its 12-point lead. Barr tallied the first five points and then Gilpin and Richmond made lay-ups.
Buczek scored five straight points to get the Dolphins back with seven before Bentley scored four of the last six points of the half to take a 43-34 lead into halftime.
The Falcons scored the first five points of the second half to take the largest lead of the game, 48-34, with 18:58 left to play. Ferguson Duke opened the half with a three-pointer and then Wheeler made a jumper.
Le Moyne got back into the game with the next 10 points over a span of 3:37. Asuncion-Byrd made a jumper in the paint and a three-pointer and then Buczek followed with a three-pointer and a jumper.
Bentley pushed its lead back to 10 with 11:15 remaining with nine of the next 12 points. Richmond made a jumper, Gilpin scored twice in the paint and then Barr drained a three-pointer.
Following a pair of Le Moyne free throws, the Falcons tallied 10 of the next 15 points to take a 67-54 lead with 5:43 to play. Duke and Barr nailed three-pointers around a free throw by Richmond and three free throws by Wheeler.
The Dolphins mounted one final comeback attempt by scoring 13 of the next 17 points to pull within four, 71-67, with 1:33 remaining. Richards started the run with a lay-up, junior forward
Isaiah Eisendorf (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook/Gannon) followed with a tip-in, Asuncion-Byrd knocked down a three-pointer, junior guard
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) recorded a conventional three-point play and then Richards canned a three-pointer to cap the spree.
The Falcons closed out the victory by going 8-for-8 from the foul line over the final 1:12 around a pair of Le Moyne baskets. Gilpin made two foul shots and then Richmond converted four around two by Duke.
