Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder
Salar Faryar (Frankfurt, Germany/Max-Eyth Schule) scored the game-winning goal with less than nine minutes remaining to give the Le Moyne College men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
In the scoreless first half, Le Moyne registered a 5-3 advantage in shots, while Saint Anselm recorded two of the half's three shots on goal.
The Dolphins tallied the game's first goal less than four minutes into the second half. Following a pair of saves seconds apart by Saint Anselm goalkeeper Helio Meirelles Neto, the Dolphins were awarded a penalty kick due to a Saint Anselm foul near the goal. First-year graduate student forward
Marek Weber (Fulda, Germany/Sportgymnasium Jena/Goethe-University Frankfurt) stepped up and buried the attempt into the back of the net at the 48:39 mark for his conference-best 14th goal of the year. The 14 goals are tied for the sixth-most in a season by a Dolphin in the program's history.
The Hawks answered back with just under 34 minutes remaining in the half. Jack Heintzelman sent a cross from the left wing in front of the net, where Kyler Thayer was able to head the ball from three yards out inside the right post at the 56:04 mark for his first goal of the year.
After Le Moyne recorded six of the game's next seven shots, including three that had to be saved by Neto, the Dolphins tallied the game-winning goal. Off a ball played into space, Faryar slipped the ball around a defender to himself before firing a shot inside the left post from 19 yards out at the 81:08 mark for his seventh marker of the campaign.
Senior goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) recorded two first-half saves to earn his 46th career victory between the pipes. Neto finished the contest with seven saves, six of which came in the second half. The Dolphins finished the game with an 18-6 advantage in shots, including 13-3 in the second half, while Saint Anselm posted a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Le Moyne (9-2-2, 5-2-2 NE10), which improved to 7-1 at home, returns to action on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Southern Connecticut State University. The Owls (6-0-3) are one of the two remaining undefeated teams in the conference.
