MEN’S SOCCER KNOCKS OFF 23RD-RANKED SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE, 2-1

New Haven, Conn. – First-year graduate students Niklas Breunung (Fulda, Germany/Freiherr-vom-Stein Schule Fulda/Hochschule Fulda/University of Applied Sciences) and Marek Weber (Fulda, Germany/Sportgymnasium Jena/Goethe-University Frankfurt) scored 95 seconds apart to lead the Le Moyne College men's soccer team to a 2-1 upset victory over 23rd-ranked Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Jess Dow Field.

The Owls, who were undefeated in their previous nine games (6-0-3), registered the first four shots of the game, with all four being on goal between the eighth and 12th minutes, but each was saved by senior goalkeeper Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute).

Following Beaury's fifth save of the game at the 39:00 mark, the Dolphins tallied the first goal of the contest. Off a corner kick from the right flag by junior midfielder Sam Daniel (     Bonnyrigg, Scotland/Lasswade/University of Mobile), Breunung headed the ball from near the right post into the netting on the left side of the goal at the 42:05 mark for his fourth tally of the season.

Only one and one-half minutes later, the Dolphins doubled their lead. After Weber had his initial shot blocked by an Owls defender, he was able to knock the loose ball into the left side of the goal at the 43:40 mark for his NE10-best 15th tally of the year. The 15 goals are tied for the fifth-most in a season by a Dolphin in the program's history, while Weber's 31 points are tied for the seventh-most.

Southern Connecticut State put a pair of shots on goal in the opening 6:10 of the second half, but Beaury turned both away.

The Dolphins put four shots on goal around one by the Owls over a span of 17 minutes, but could not add to their lead.

The Owls broke through with 29 seconds remaining as James Foster scored into the left side of the net from the right side of the penalty box near the endline after taking a pass from Ignacio Navarro.

Southern Connecticut State was unable to get off another shot in an attempt to tie the score.

Beaury finished the game with eight saves as he earned his 47th career victory between the pipes and became the first goalkeeper in the program's history to earn 10 victories in a season in each of his four years. Noah Varonier, who ranks second in the conference in goals against average (one spot ahead of Beaury) and save percentage (behind Beaury), tallied five saves in the loss. Le Moyne recorded a 12-11 edge in shots, including 7-5 in the first half, while the Owls posted a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Le Moyne (10-2-2, 6-2-2 NE10), which improved to 2-0-1 on the season against ranked opponents, is back on the road on Saturday at Saint Michael's College at 2:00 p.m.
