Syracuse, N.Y. – Taylor Kaczynski scored twice in 98 seconds late in the second half to give 10th-ranked Adelphi University a 2-1 victory over the Le Moyne College men's soccer team on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field.
Le Moyne, which had its six-game unbeaten streak snapped, tallied the game's first goal just over eight and one-half minutes into the contest. Following a corner kick, freshman back
Saemundur Óli Björnsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/The Commercial College of Iceland) had his shot blocked by an Adelphi defender. Off the rebound, redshirt senior midfielder
Marcello Palucci (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep/Florida International) blasted a shot from the top left corner of the penalty box towards the goal. Just prior to the ball entering the goal, first-year graduate student forward
Marek Weber (Fulda, Germany/Sportgymnasium Jena/Goethe-University Frankfurt) headed the ball from the near left post into the right side of the net at the 8:35 mark for his NE10-best 17th goal of the season. The 17 goals are tied for the fourth-most in a season by a Dolphin in the program's history, while Weber's 36 points are the sixth-most.
Each team took three shots over the final 36 minutes of the half, but the Dolphins had the only two shots on goal, both of which were saved by Adelphi goalkeeper Raymond Leto.
Following 34 minutes of scoreless action to start the second half, during which time the Panthers had a 6-4 edge in shots, while each put one shot on goal, the Panthers evened the score at one apiece. After senior goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) turned away a rocketed shot by Toni Soler, Kaczynski knocked the rebound into the lower left corner of the net at the 79:05 mark off a shot from eight yards out.
Only 1:38 later, Adelphi netted the game-winning goal. Federico De Oliveira, last year's NE10 Player of the Year, carried the ball to the right post before slipping a pass to the middle of the penalty box, where Kaczynski sent another shot into the lower left side of the goal for his fifth goal of the campaign. All five of Kaczynski's goals have come over three games in the last seven days.
The Dolphins got off three shots in the final 2:29, including a shot on goal by Weber with six seconds that was saved by Leto.
Beaury finished with three saves in the loss, his fifth in seven career games against the Panthers. Leto tallied four saves, including two in each half, in the victory for the Panthers. Adelphi recorded a 13-12 edge in shots, including 9-7 in the second half, while the Dolphins posted a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Le Moyne (11-3-2, 7-3-2 NE10), which has lost four straight games to the Panthers, closes out the regular season on Friday at Bentley University at 3:00 p.m. The Dolphins can finish the season in third, fourth or fifth place in the NE10 standings, while Bentley can finish seventh, eighth or ninth.
