Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore guard
C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) led five Dolphins in double figures as the Le Moyne College men's basketball team defeated The College of Saint Rose, 84-70, in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday night at Ted Grant Court.
Asuncion-Byrd led the Dolphins offensively with a game-high 19 points, 10 of which he scored in the first half, while adding season-highs of eight rebounds and four assists. Junior guards
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) and
Tyree Chambers (Bayreuth, Germany/Graf-Münster Gymnasium/Providence) were each perfect from three-point range en route to 12 and 10 points, respectively. Senior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) finished with 11 points, including eight in the second half, while junior guard
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) tallied 10 points, six rebounds and five assists. Buczek and the Dolphins won each of the four home regular season games with the Golden Knights since his arrival on the Heights. Prior to his arrival, the Dolphins were 4-10 at home against Saint Rose. The Dolphins went 14-of-21 from three-point range in the contest. The .667 percentage is the best in the program's history and tops the previous-best mark of .632 after going 12-of-19 at Pace on November 14, 2012.
Tyler Sayre and Chris Dorgler led the Golden Knights in the loss with 16 points each. Sayre had eight in each half, while Dorgler tallied 13 of his points in the second half. Julian Lipinski registered 14 points, eight of which came in the first half.
The Dolphins opened the game with seven of the first nine points before the Golden Knights responded with a 7-2 run of their own. Buczek started the game's scoring with a three-pointer, Asuncion-Byrd followed with a jumper and then junior guard
Anthony Richards (New Castle, Pa./New Castle/West Virginia Wesleyan) recorded a lay-up.
Following ties at 11 and 17, Hyland hit his second of four first-half three-pointers to give the Dolphins the lead for good. Sayre answered with a jumper, but Chambers followed with consecutive three-pointers to give the Dolphins their first seven-point lead of the game with 7:39 left in the half.
Le Moyne's lead bounced between four and seven points over the next four minutes before Asuncion-Byrd nailed a three-pointer to start a 9-4 spurt, which gave the Dolphins a 39-29 lead with 27 seconds left in the stanza. Following a Hyland three-pointer and a Lipinski lay-up, Asuncion-Byrd drained another three-pointer.
Damon Coleman made two free throws with two seconds left to get the Golden Knights within 39-31 at halftime.
Saint Rose opened the second half with the first six points to trim its deficit to two. Dorgler made two free throws, Coleman converted a lay-up and then Lipinski made a lay-up.
Following a Sayre jumper, the Dolphins tallied eight of the next 10 points to regain their eight-point edge. Asuncion-Byrd made a lay-up, Richards drilled a three-pointer and then Asuncion-Byrd buried a three-pointer.
After Asuncion-Byrd had a tip-in to make the score 53-45, Saint Rose rattled off six straight points to get within two with 12:21 remaining. Dorgler drained a three-pointer and then registered a conventional three-point play.
Le Moyne answered with a 13-3 run to put the game out of reach. Junior forward
Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) led the run with six points, while Sangster had four and Chambers buried his third three-pointer of the game.
After a three-point play by Shane Herrity to get Saint Rose within 66-57 with 7:12 remaining, the Dolphins rattled off nine straight points to take their largest lead of the game with 4:15 left. Buczek had five of the points, while Sangster and Kaigler each had two.
Le Moyne's lead bounced between 14 and 18 points the remainder of the game.
Le Moyne (16-5, 11-4 NE10), which has won 11 of its first 15 conference games for the first time in the program's 21 years in the Northeast-10, is back in action at home on Saturday against American International College at 3:00 p.m.
