MEN’S BASKETBALL NAILS 16 THREE-POINTERS EN ROUTE TO 87-66 WIN OVER AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior guard Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) tallied 17 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to an 87-66 victory over American International College on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Hyland connected on five-of-eight three-point attempts en route to his team-high point total, 14 of which came in the second half, while he also dished out a team-best five assists. Junior guard Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) recorded 10 of his 16 points in the opening half. Sophomore guard C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) registered 13 points, while junior forward Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) posted 11 points. Freshman forward Tom Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) pulled down a career-best nine rebounds to lead the Dolphins. The Dolphins connected on 16 three-pointers, which is tied for the third-most in a game in the program's history. The Dolphins last made at least 16 three-pointers on February 3, 1995, when they made a program record-tying 18 against Bridgeport.

Jayvon Pitts-Young recorded a game-high 25 points, including 15 in the second half, in the losing effort. Juwan Moody tallied 13 of his 18 points in the second half, while Rasheed Howard posted 10 points and seven rebounds.

The teams opened the game by trading points, with the lead changing sides five times in the first 9:07. After Sangster tied the score for the third and final time with a lay-up, junior guard Anthony Richards (New Castle, Pa./New Castle/West Virginia Wesleyan) drained a three-pointer to put the Dolphins in front, 15-12.

Following four points from each team over the next three minutes, the Dolphins tallied eight of the next nine points to take their first double-digit lead of the game, 27-17, with 4:41 to go in the half. Sangster started the spurt with a three-pointer, Hyland followed with one of his own and then junior forward Isaiah Eisendorf (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook/Gannon) converted a lay-up to force a Yellow Jackets timeout.

After the Yellow Jackets scored seven of the next nine points to cut their deficit in half, the Dolphins blew the game open with 12 straight points. Senior forward Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) and junior guard Tyree Chambers (Bayreuth, Germany/Graf-Münster Gymnasium/Providence) drained three-pointers, Kaigler recorded a conventional three-point play and then Sangster buried a three-pointer for a 41-24 lead with 53 seconds left.

Pitts-Young made three free throws and knocked down a three-pointer around a three-ball by Buczek to get the Yellow Jackets within 44-30 at halftime.

Following back-and-forth play over the opening 6:35 of the second half, during which time Le Moyne's lead bounced between 11 and 18 points, the Dolphins nailed three straight three-pointers to take their first 20-point lead of the game. Brown hit the first trifecta and Hyland followed with a pair on the next two possessions.

The Dolphins pushed their lead to 24 with seven straight points after AIC scored three points in a span of 34 seconds. Kaigler had a fast-break dunk, Sangster made two foul shots and then Hyland drained a three-pointer in transition with 8:50 to play.

The teams went back and forth over the next six minutes with Le Moyne's lead bouncing between 20 and 25 points and settling at 22 with 3:10 remaining. Hyland then knocked down his fourth three-pointer of the half and then junior forward Chandler Benson (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) had a fast-break dunk to give the Dolphins a 27-point lead, their largest of the game.

Moody nailed a pair of three-pointers in the final 46 seconds to deliver the final score.

Le Moyne (17-5, 12-4 NE10), which is 12 games above .500 for the first time since the 1997-98 season (also 17-5), is back in action on Tuesday at Pace University at 7:30 p.m.
