Manchester, N.H. – Daniel Trainor capped a 3-0 fourth-quarter run with the eventual game-winning goal as Southern New Hampshire University upset the top-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Larkin Field.
The loss is Le Moyne's first in 18 all-time match-ups with the Penmen. The setback snaps Le Moyne win streaks of 26 games overall, 29 games in NE10 action and 33 games in the regular season. It is the first loss to an unranked team in 96 games dating back to a 7-6 defeat at Merrimack on March 31, 2007. It also marks the program's first loss in 27 all-time games in the state of New Hampshire. Southern New Hampshire becomes just the fourth program to record a win over the Dolphins in NE10 action over the last 18 seasons and 174 games (168-6).
The Dolphins opened the game with a pair of goals over the first 4:17. Senior midfielder
Brian Rogers (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) got the Dolphins on the scoreboard at the 12:31 mark with his ninth goal of the season. Junior midfielder
Tom Koster (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Onondaga C.C.) netted his fourth goal of the year with 10:43 remaining in the opening quarter.
Southern New Hampshire answered back with a pair of goals of its own. Trainor pulled the Penmen within one by finishing off a pass from Devin Calkins with 8:24 left. Corey Cairo then tied the score with 3:02 remaining in the first quarter after taking a pass from Chris West.
Junior attackman
Justin Kesselring (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) gave the lead back to the Dolphins with his team-high 16th goal with 1:02 remaining after taking a feed in transition from freshman attackman
Riley Larson (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe).
The Penmen tied the score again midway through the second quarter as Cameron McGuire found the back of the net off a pass from Trainor.
Le Moyne took the lead back 71 seconds later as Larson tallied his second goal of the season with 6:02 left before halftime off a pass from Rogers.
Southern New Hampshire responded with three straight goals to take a 6-4 lead. Zach Tanner tied the score for the third time with 4:14 to go after receiving a pass from Trainor. Keifer Heckman put his team in front for the first time with 1:48 left off a feed from West. Zach Jacobs followed 61 seconds later with his sixth goal of the year.
Le Moyne countered with the only three goals of the third quarter to take the lead back. After junior long-stick midfielder
Justin Hussey (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Onondaga C.C.) caused a turnover on the first possession of the second half and cleared the ball, freshman attackman
Sean Emerson (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) scooped up a loose ball on the left side of the crease and dumped it into the net at the 12:59 mark for his 15th goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder
Dan Entenmann (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) evened the score at six apiece with 11:24 remaining in the period. Following another Hussey caused turnover and ground ball, Entenmann gave the Dolphins the lead again with his fourth goal of the campaign with 9:09 to go.
Just over two minutes into the fourth quarter, West knotted the score at seven apiece with his second goal of the year.
Emerson gave the Dolphins their final lead of the game with 12:06 to play with his team-best 16th goal of the season off a feed from Rogers.
Southern New Hampshire rattled off the next three goals to take the lead for good. Off the faceoff following Emerson's goal, long-stick Scott Lavey carried the ball behind the cage before wrapping around the left side and putting a low shot into the net at the 11:52 mark to tie the score with his first goal of the year. Following a save by Tyler Walsh, Heckman gave the Penmen the lead 14 seconds later with his 10th goal of the season with 10:04 remaining. After a shot by Heckman went wide, Cairo picked up the loose ball and fed Trainor in front of the net for his 10th marker of the season and the eventual game-winning goal with 7:15 remaining in the game.
Following a turnover by each team over the next four and one-half minutes, Entenmann cut Le Moyne's deficit to one with his team-best third goal of the day with 2:20 remaining.
Southern New Hampshire won the ensuing faceoff, but Heckman was swarmed by the Le Moyne defense left of the crease and coughed up the ball. Out of the scrum, senior defensive midfielder
Ryan Desmond (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe) ended up with the ball and raced up field. He sent a shot towards the net, but it was snared out of the air by Walsh with 1:07 to play.
After a Le Moyne timeout with 51 seconds left following turnovers by each team in a span of three seconds, the Penmen threw the ball away with 17 seconds left, giving the Dolphins one final chance. After getting the ball into the offensive end, Entenmann fired a shot with three seconds to go, but Walsh was able to deflect it away and the clock ran out.
Junior goalkeeper
Jack Sweeney (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Onondaga C.C.) registered eight saves, including five saves, as he suffered his first collegiate loss. Walsh earned the win between the pipes after turning away 16 shots, including six in the second quarter and four in the fourth quarter.
Le Moyne (6-1, 3-1 NE10) returns home for the first time since February 19 to take on The College of Saint Rose on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
