Rochester, N.Y. – Orla Martin scored midway through the first half to lead Roberts Wesleyan College to a 1-0 win over the Le Moyne College women's soccer team in the season opener for both teams on Thursday evening at the RWC Soccer Stadium.
Roberts Wesleyan scored the only goal it would need in the 21st minute of the contest. After Maya Rutland had a shot from 12 yards saved by a sliding
Anastasija Cumika (Riga, Latvia/Riga Kengarags/West Florida), Martin was able to chip the rebound from 17 yards out in the middle of the penalty box into the right side of the net at the 20:48 mark.
Each team took four shots over the remaining 24 minutes of the first half, but Le Moyne's only attempt on target was saved, while Cumika turned away two Roberts Wesleyan shots.
The Redhawks had a chance to double their lead only 53 seconds into the second half, but Cumika was able to snare a penalty kick by Israela Groves at the left goal post.
The Dolphins tallied the game's next eight shots over 23 minutes, but each of the five that were on target were saved by goalkeeper Kelsey Brinkel, including Le Moyne's final shot of the game with 17:31 remaining.
Roberts registered the final five shots of the contest, but was unable to add to its lead as Cumika stopped each of the three shots on goal.
Cumika finished the contest with nine saves, the second-most in her Dolphin tenure. Brinkel also turned away nine shots in the win to keep the Dolphins off the scoreboard. Le Moyne recorded a 16-15 edge in shots, while taking five of the game's seven corner kicks.
Le Moyne (0-1), which has fallen to the Redhawks in four of the last five years, is back in action on Sunday at Daemen College at 11:00 a.m.
