WOMEN’S SOCCER UPSETS SAINT ROSE, 1-0, FOR FIRST TIME AS NE10 OPPONENTS

Albany, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder Claire Stackel (Watertown, N.Y./Copenhagen) scored off a free kick to give the Le Moyne College women's soccer team a 1-0 upset victory over The College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday evening at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

The victory is Le Moyne's first over the Golden Knights in 18 all-time meetings as Northeast-10 opponents (0-16-1 entering the game). In the all-time series with Saint Rose, dating back to 1989, the Dolphins improve to 6-18-2, with the last win coming during the 1999 season, while improving to 2-8-2 in the Capital Region, with the only other win coming in 1992.

In the scoreless first half, Saint Rose posted an 8-2 advantage in shots. Each team put a shot on goal in the first 2:30 of the contest, but the goalkeepers were able to turn the shots away. The Golden Knights added shots on goal at the 18:32 mark and with eight seconds left in the half, but junior goalkeeper Anastasija Cumika (Riga, Latvia/Riga Kengarags/West Florida) stopped both attempts.

Cumika made two saves over the opening 22:36 of the second half to keep the Golden Knights off the scoreboard, while Stackel forced Saint Rose goalkeeper Marika Laurendeau to make a pair of saves in the first 27:36, the second of which came after a Saint Rose foul.

Stackel struck after another Saint Rose foul 3:10 later. From 25 yards out on the left side, Stackel's shot slipped through the goalkeeper's hands to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead at the 75:46 mark. The goal is Stackel's second in as many games after being held scoreless through the first six games.

Saint Rose had two shots on goal in the final 8:11 of the game, but Cumika knocked each away to preserve the shutout victory.

Cumika finished the contest with seven saves, including four in the second half, to earn her 12th win between the pipes as a Dolphin and her sixth shutout. Laurendeau registered four saves in suffering her first loss of the season. The Golden Knights recorded a 14-8 advantage in shots, while taking all six of the game's corner kicks.

Le Moyne (3-5, 2-3 NE10) returns home to host #6 nationally-ranked Adelphi University on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
